Who knows what they’ll do with it after, but free tethering of your Rogers cell phone to your computer has been extended. It commenced July 2009, and was set to expire–read, you were going to be *charged*–as of December 31, 2009. But the new decade will bring a new, free extension of wireless computer tethering, so surf away.
*The catch is that this is supposed to be for Rogers customers who subscribe to data plans of 1GB per month or greater.
This is a real boon for those people who are out of range of free wifi sometimes or always, and for those who have iPhones this is a painlessly easy way to get on the net and have a decent speed and amount of surfing.
What happens after May 3rd? Will Rogers have kept enough people from signing on with Bell, Telus or (for those who don’t care about coverage area) Wind? Will there be further or perhaps permanent “extensions?” It’s data you’ve paid for already, so what difference does it make if it’s checking email, streaming radio to your phone, or sucking bandwidth on your computer?
Time will tell. As is usually the case.
