The coolest apps yet are going to be available in just over a month’s time (in September 2009 according to Apple).
More than just GPS or song identifiers or games with tilt, you’ll be able to look at your iPhone in new ways that place an overlay on what you’re viewing in real time.
Only iPhone 3GS owners will be able to take advantage of these advances, which in addition to existing features like GPS use the compass and other new features of the iPhone. You’ll need data to run these in real time as well, for most purposes. The “camera viewer” is an as-yet untapped tool. But wait until you see it.
The apps should be available coincident with the release of the operating software version 3.1, in early September.
Many more uses for this technology is being dreamed up–and implemented including the slightly scary “Augmented ID” app which uses facial recognition and identifies people, and subsequently displays their profiles in social websites.
