Price drop for refreshed iPhones on fido: $49* iPhone Apps add new reality: like nothing you’ve seen before

Over a month after Rogers and fido released the iPhone 3GS, the main topic about the device on most online fora isn’t how to use some special feature, which operating system software is best, or even how to hack the phone: the main topic still is who is still waiting, and waiting, and waiting. Rogers/fido don’t seem to have a handle on how to deliver thousands more iPhones, nor how to keep in touch with thousands of existing and imminent customers.

Those who ordered through Rogers/fido, and can do so, have long since cancelled their Rogers/fido order and picked up at an Apple store. But Apple stores are out of reach for millions of Canadians. And, sadly, so are iPhones.

Are you still waiting for yours? Let us know.

And before we completely blame Big Red, have a look at this post from over at ehMac.ca, by fjnmusic:

People. Look at the big picture. Rogers is back-ordered up the wazoo. People who placed their orders in the third week of June still have not received their items. That’s over a month ago. If they are that far constipated (”backed-up” if you prefer), and somebody walks into a Rogers store today, what do you think their odds are? Meanwhile, not one Apple Store has been sold out this entire time. Why do you think that is? When new shipments arrive in Canada (or any other country), where do you think they go first? Why would Apple really care if Rogers is undersupplied? They have lots of other phones they can sell and are not out of stock on.

Seriously. Read the writing on the wall. This is BS indeed. Why you feel so much loyalty to a company that can’t deliver is beyond me. You’ll be paying your monthly cellular and data bills to Rogers either way. But if you have an Apple Store anywhere within traveling distance and you’d like to have an iPhone in your possession before summer is over, I think you know what you need to do. I’ve been quite enjoying mine for a month now.

Very interesting indeed! I like many others wanted to get an iphone 3gs and have done the calls to local Rogers stores and ever checking both Rogers.ca and Fido.ca for availability. I was surprised to go to the downtown Future Shop in Edmonton where they had 4 16GB black 3GS! Found that a couple of the stores had the same model in stock but only for Rogers. I got the 6gb/month deal and a voice plan and have my phone NOW. Checked with other stores recently (Dad just bought a 3G and is thinking about returning it and getting the 3GS too!) and still no Roger’s store in Edmonton has any, but FS does…

So what is the best phone deal to get if someone wants a new 3gs and needs a new plan.

aka, i’m with bell, using a black berry curve.. and want to switch because i dislike the service and the phone.

  3. 3. mMichael Says:

Make sure you get a plan before July 31st since the $30/6GB per month data plan won’t be available after that (unless Rogers/fido extends it).

The rest depends on how many minutes you need, what kind of voicemail, and lots of other factors.

and what is the deal with buying iphones from the apple store. Last year I recall when iphones came to Canada you could only get one from fido/rogers.

Why should Apple care about Rogers? How many iPhones are they selling at the Apple Store at the full $700 price? Most people are performing an upgrade at $200 with Rogers paying the difference to Apple.

It’s wrong of Apple to not supply Rogers for backorders from as far back as June 22 and instead ship to an Apple Store to sell to a walk in on July 28. If I buy an iPhone from Rogers, am I not also an Apple customer?

  6. 6. mMichael Says:

Stu, not all the iPhones being sold at the Apple store go for $700. For all we know, Rogers/fido only ordered a certain amount, and that was fulfilled.

  7. 7. Stu Says:

I know. Many people are upgrading in the Apple Store at $200 with a Rogers contract. Apple and Rogers are partners in Canada. Rogers is getting it’s contracts regardless and Apple gets the sale, plus any accessories you buy when you meet with your “personal shopper”.

I ordered a 32GB 3GS Black on June 24. Still backordered on July 29 and latest rumour on the ehmac.ca forum has no new shipments until mid-August. Wonder whether they will have enough for the school year start?

I can’t imagine what will be the image of Fido after they have screwed up with IPhone 3G S promotion. I always thought Fido is cheap and service is OK – what else to expect.
But when I heard about promotion and ordered an IPhone 3G S more than a month ago (they said back then that I’m going to get it in 2 days!), called them I don’t know how many times, was given promises that “next week it will be here etc.”, have been added to “waiting list” (sort of black hole) – I found yesterday that …. MY ORDER HAS BEEN LOST IN THEIR ***** SYSTEM!!!!! So, all that pain I went through is for nothing and I would never get an IPhone….If and only if I would not try to find it myself - I printed out a list of all Fido kiosks/stores and after calling a few and receiving an expected answer – I found one, available right now and without all these “waiting lists”. So, I ran to the store and got one the same day.
    BAD FIDO!!!!!
