The game of jailbreaking/unlocking continues. You can jailbreak your iPhone 3G at 3.0 software now. The 3GS users out there will still have to wait a little while.
Mine iPhone 3G was jailbroken and unlocked for the longest time until I updated to 3.0. Jailbreaking and unlocking is easy. There is nothing to worry about if and when you do it. It’s easy to restore the phone too if you want to go back to factory settings.
I jailbroke it mainly for the reason of using pdanet to tether. Now that I can do it without jailbreaking, I probably won’t do it…..yet anyway. If there is some new magical program that makes jailbreaking worthwhile, then I will do it immediately. For now, I haven’t found that program yet.
My iPhone 3G was unlocked too. I actually used it but I still have my first gen to use when I go to the USA for use with T-Mobile. I actually have just paid the roaming fees the last few times I went. It maybe amounted to $10 per trip which is no big deal. For all the big talkers and texters out there, having a T-Mobile or some other account is a must.
For all your unlocking and or jailbreaking needs, get it from the source, the iPhone dev team, don’t pay for a free service.

For United States (or other) travel with your unlocked iPhone 2G, 3G, or other phone, don’t forget that you can buy a local pay as you go SIM for $10, $20 or more depending on how much airtime you need. That will work fine in an unlocked phone. And turn voicemail off on your Rogers cell, or you might be charged long distance–twice, once for when it reaches you, once for when the call bounces back to your voicemail. Rogers will erase this charge for you if it shows up on your account, but that’s a hassle compared to temporarily disabling voicemail.
