The hockey season is finally back. It’s been a long summer for Canadian fans. I guess the best thing about last season was watching Sidney Crosby coming so close to being a Stanley Cup Champion. Most Canadian teams bombed out of the playoffs early and my team (the Canucks) didn’t even make it to the show. As the new season starts, suddenly hockey becomes the most important thing in many peoples lives. The good thing is that if you have an iPhone, you will always know what is happening with your team.
Last season I discussed a feature about NHL.com that allowed you basically see a live scoreboard of any game. You can read that post here. This season, NHL.com has changed their live scoreboard feature to flash. Therefore, it’s a no go on the iPhone. That sucks.
However, there are many other options to get your precious scores:
#1
NHL.app
NHL.app is a web based app that will give you the scores of all the games for the day. To get NHL.app on your iPhone, simply go to www.nhlapp.com in safari. You can then add it as a bookmark to your homescreen for easy access or add it as a regular bookmark. This is a simple little app. It gives you the scores you want, but not much else. The app is not really meant to keep open and watch the scores that way, it is basically just to check them and exit the program. If you launch the app from your homescreen, it won’t let you refresh the page, but if you launch it while in safari, you can refresh the page, which I find a little odd.
# 2
ScoreMobile
This is a good Canadian app. The only problem, is that the app is still waiting for Apple approval for its most recent update which includes NHL information. Until then, we are out of luck. This app is free.
# 3
SportsTap
This is probably the best all-around sports app that I’ve found. It is free and it definitely worth a download. Not only does it give you up to the minute NHL scores and info, you get info from every other major sport you can think of. Until ScoreMobile is updated, I would say this is the best sports app for Canadians.
The only sad thing is that the original Hockey Night in Canada theme isn’t coming back. The new one is ok, but it doesn’t compare to the original.

Me too, but I don’t think that is possible. Maybe the next iPhone will have live TV.

I’ve got ScoreMobile and Sportstap, and there’s another called Sportacular (also free).
but my favourite is Sportstap - I was using their web based version http://sportstap.mobi last season on my iPod Touch and before the native app came out, and it works well too. Now that the new NHL season has started I’ll take a closer look at the other two apps and do a better comparison
I was just thinking today there should be an app like the MLB At Bat app but for the NHL where you can get video replays and highlights of games in progress.
2nd period just starting, go Canucks!

yeah it was a good game. The ot goal was simply amazing! Not many people know this but there’s also an espn site made just for the iPhone which is really good. I believe it’s http://www.m.espn.go.com
I mostly use this site cuz it’s easy to use and has everything from scores to standings stats and even team news

Canucks dominate!

I found a flaw that better be fixed soon with nhlapp since its by far my favourite one. The Van/Cal game went to OT, therefore the Flames are 0-1-1 not 0-2.
But I’m sure they’ll be on top of it soon. Well, it is CBS sports. . .

Sportstap is by far the best sports application for the iPhone. The Score Mobile doesn’t even compare. The Score Mobile lacks so many sports and leagues while Sportstap keeps offering more and more.

I have tried them all and prefer sportacular. It has all the sports plus allows you to track certain players.

Downloaded SportsTap so I’m always aware of how bad I’ll be ridiculed at the office the next day.
GO LEAFS GO!

by the way, any of you Canucks fans know of ways to listen to Team1040 live radio stream on the iPhone? I know WunderRadio can do it - just wondering if there are alternate ways before I decide to buy that…

Did you try NHL.com’s live streams? Might work, I haven’t tested it myself though.

Been using sportstap for a while now. Excellent for even soccer coverage. Deleted score mobile.

Pretty sure it uses flash.. maybe flash based tv will be possible.

Hi I’m the Product Manager for ScoreMobile iPhone Edition. We’re a Canadian sports media company located in downtown Toronto. We’ve had NHL coverage in our multi-sport application since Oct 2007, but there was a bit of a snag getting hockey into the native app. Anyways, that was resolved with a new release in Appl App Store Oct 13. Please let me know if you have comments or questions about NHL or any other of the sports we cover. (Firstname.Lastname AT theScoreDOTCOM)
