It’s been building up over the past couple weeks. 3G service seems to be getting worse. To me anyway. My reception has been getting continually worse over the past few weeks since updating to 2.1. I don’t really know the reason for it. Maybe the network is running totally over capacity and the cell towers are starting to melt.

The data part of 3G service has seemed to be ok for me lately, the voice part seems to be the problem.  In fact data was so good today that I used 460mb today. Yes, in just one day. I mainly used all of this data by streaming radio with WunderRadio and a bit of tethering with PdaNet.

3G voice is my problem. For example, today, one of my iPhones would not receive calls while on the 3G network. I would call it and it would go straight to voicemail. So I switched it to edge, and guess what? The phone rang. So I tried it on the other iPhone and guess what, it worked fine. Later in the day though, that one didn’t want to ring anymore on 3G. However, it did work on edge. When I switched it to edge, a bunch of texts came through that had been sent earlier. By 11pm, things seemed to be ok.

The funny thing is that 3G was at full bars the whole time. It never lost one bar.

Has anyone else been experiencing problems like these whether it be with voice or data?

Yes the same problem is happening here with my iPhone. Im really upset about it and very close to going to rogers and either getting a new one or getting out, because honestly, I miss over 3/4 of my calls and get my texts hours late. All becasue my stupid phone cant hold a connection. When ever I’m out of the house and go to use internet with FULL 3G I’ll get a pop up that literaly says, no active cell tower, or when i need to make a call it doesnt ring at all…. Every time I have to text call or going on the internet, I have to restart my damn phone. All since 2.1….. When 2.1 came out my phone wouldnt update properly. and now it shows I have more bars in more places, but whats the damn point when I have to restart my phone every time I need to do somthing with it. To give you guys an idea I restart my phone 12 - 15 times a day…… I’ve always restored it 3 or 4 times in the last week or so…. this is becoming quite the disappointment..

How did you know you used 460 MB in data? Is there an application that tells you how much you’re using?

  3. 3. Nitar Says:

I have quote the opposite problem. My 3g call quality is quite good, but my my data is painfully slow, I average around 450 Kbps. This is from the Toronto downtown core.

  4. 4. Nitar Says:

theo, me thinks somethings we v with your phone, not rogers. Try replacing it at the apple store. NOT the rogers store, they’ll be of little help to you.

    Hey Ruff,

the same thing is going on here but i know for a fact my town i s working on the 3g towers.. it says i have full 3g but sometimes my voice service is CRAP

and ruff how do you stream so much and not have the battery die or are you constantly charging yours through the day?

  6. 6. SK13 Says:

I don’t have a data plan so I don’t use voice over 3G but yeah i think talking with the iphone is sketch in general.

People have been complaining to me that they get their voice echoing on their end (for me its fine).

  7. 7. Kaitlyn Says:

We don’t even have 3G where I am, so I wouldn’t know. If I’m not in Wifi range, I have to run off of Edge/GPRS.

  8. 8. generalinq Says:

I haven’t used my voice plan enough to realize any problems but the 3g tests I’ve done in speedtest are not good at all. What speeds is everyone else receiving on average with 3g?

  9. 9. Dogz Says:

I’m in Ottawa, and have been having a battle with data on the 3G today and yesterday. Sometimes the pages load, other times they don’t.

On Sunday I had my first dropped call experience. Had full bars on 3g and would last about 2 seconds and then drop the call. Had to turn off 3G and then worked fine on edge.

I use the iphone mostly for data and have been finding that very frustrating of late.

  10. 10. Dave Says:

I’m not sure where this is happening to you guys, but I’ve totally noticed the voice problem since last week in Vancouver! Yesterday, I couldn’t make outgoing call at all with 3G! And when the phone rang, the moment I answered it dropped the call…

  11. 11. genny Says:

i’ll have to agree with that. =/
the network has been terrible lately.

  12. 12. Abhi P Says:

    **PLEASE READ FOR TEMPORARY SOLUTION**
I’ve called Rogers about a dozen times, and the consensus seems to indicate that their systems weren’t made to handle the recent uprise in 3G smartphones, namely the iPhone 3G and the Blackberry Bold 9000.

If your noticing that you have full bars and your 3G data is transfering really slowly or not at all, yet you can still make calls, do the following for temporary relief.

WARNING: Resetting your network settings will erase all your saved network configurations and WEP/WPA keys.

    1. Access ‘Settings’
    2. Then go to ‘General’
    3. Then go to the very bottom and select ‘Reset’
    4. Now select ‘Reset Network Settings’

Wait for your iPhone to reset and test out your data again via Safari/AppStore/Cydia etc.

  13. 13. Abhi P Says:

Please let me know if the above works, since I’ve tried it on two other iPhones other than my own (one jailbroken, one not) and it worked on both. I apologize sincerely if it doesn’t and all you ended up doing was erasing your network settings :S

Also I have had to do this a number of times to get my data going again, symptoms usually occur after syncing….not sure why.

  14. 14. AF Says:

Abhi, I’ve tried that workaround, but it only works for a few minutes and the 3g problems start again. Last time i called into fido they said to report my outside location and signal strength (or lack thereof) and if enough people report it, it might get fixed. I doubt it though, the tech was trying to find excuses to get me off the line…

  15. 15. Jeff Says:

Here in Quebec City: 3g, full bars and mostly all the times it’s impossible to connect Safari to Internet??!!??
Rogers, you gonna find a solution to this!!!!!!!!

  16. 16. Theo Says:

I would go to an apple store but I live in London ontario, no apple store any where near me. Im gunna try and fight with rogers for a new one tonight or tommorw tho, I just cant deal with this any more. Never jail broken (I have a jailbroken touch first gen) Im really upset about it. But I really hope rogers will replace it, but it’s been so long since I got it, I picked it up launch day and Thats over there coverage I believe…

  17. 17. LoWd0Wn Says:

I have found tha same wit my iphone. The calls are the problem. 3G seems OK but I lose more calls as they just hang up after 2 rings.
This has all happened after the 2.1 update. They say that 2.2 is coming soon??
    Sure hope it fixes this…!!!

  18. 18. ovcrash Says:

Here on the south shore of montreal i get full bar and 3G sign but Safari is very slow. Calls seems to be fine, no drop calls yet. I think rogers are having a hard time keeping up with the 3G demand. I hope they will fix this soon.

  19. 19. Top Ca Says:

ruff. Are you using Fido or Rogers?

My friend is with Rogers and he has no issue whatsoever but I have had similar issue with Fido.

PS: I just got the new iPhone adapter with the green dot on it. Wow. A huge box with such a small adapter.

  20. 20. Gad Says:

I have had my iphone 3G for about 1 week in the Montreal area on Fido (Rogers) network. It seems to work fine most of the time but then out of the blue, I have no more access to data (over 3G or Edge). No mail, no web, no app store. Basically nothing that needs the internet! I have called Fido and they once resent the activation codes for data and that cleared it up but then it happened again. I have been able to get it back by resetting the iphone or just waiting till it comes back on its own. The 3G indicated is still showing but the connection is not working and it is happening a couple of times a day! Very frustrating! The guy at Fido today told me it can happen and hopefully iphone ver 2.2 will fix these issues! Lame!

  21. 21. whatinhellisthat? Says:

Rogers needs to hire Bell Mobility to show them how to do things right.

I have 5 full 3G bars at all times and I get 100-300 kbps data !!! 100…… WTF. Fogers needs to hire smart people to do their job for them. We need to stop blaming the iphone because my razr2 and my 3G LG all drop calls and transfer data at 100-200kbps…. what a sham. 3G my ass.

  22. 22. Teebs Says:

Yes this was happening to me before it was the hottest thing. No one would help me or know what I was feeling since updating to 2.1.

Well I sent my iPhone into Apple and hopefully they return it repaired saying something was wrong.

What about GPS tracker- are you all getting the accurate little blue ball following you? Because I’m back to the big circle in your area. It’s nowhere as near as accurate as it used to be.

3G sucks. I never thought this would have happened.

  23. 23. CDS Says:

3G sucks in Edmonton, miss a few calls each day, lately for the last week have been leaving it on Edge

  24. 24. ENC Says:

I haven’t been able to make/receive calls on my iPhone 3g for two weeks now here in Vancouver. I get”call failed” repeatedly. I called Fido and they said it must be a “weak signal”. Well, does that mean forever I can’t use my phone? So I tried it on “Edge” and now I can make and receive calls.
But the tech on the phone didn’t suggest it, I had to look it up on the Apple website.

  25. 25. John Crow Says:

    http://thisyear.ca/2008/11/01/rogers-iphone-3g-missed-and-dropped-calls/

This is happening a lot since the bold was released, they are overloaded, call them and get heard so they upgrade their service faster

  26. 26. Eddy Says:

I’m using Rogers 3G EDGE Rocket Stick, a usb device that plugs into your computer, allowing to access the net from just about anywhere. The system royally sucks. They advertise “up to 7.2 Mega bits per second download. Well I don’t even get more than 57 kilo bits per second regardeless which computer I install it on. As many of you say, it is a sham. I would expect at least 5 Mbps but I don’t even get close to 1/8 that. Also, like you guys on the I Phone the data downloads start then stop of and on. It takes 40 minutes to download something that takes 22 minutes on regular dial up. The other problem I have is that the pages time out before the get downloaded.
