App Store Review: Shazam From the Forums: iPhone vs Blackberry

I’m down in the States again and my first generation iPhone is getting some good use. It is nice to have an unlocked phone which I can just slip my T-Mobile sim into and I’m good to go. I can’t stress this enough, don’t pay Rogers/Fido any roaming charges. It is the biggest rip off of all time.

Since I have jailbroken my iPhone 3G, if and when the 3G software unlock becomes available, I won’t hesitate to unlock it. My original plan was to keep my iPhone 3G a virgin and not jailbreak nor unlock it. Well, that didn’t last too long. I’m not sure how long it will take before we see a 3G software unlock. When firmware was as 1.1.2 and 1.1.3, we thought we would never see a software unlock. Quite a bit of time passed before the software unlock at that time came (remember ziphone). It was quite a surprise when it did come out so hopefully we will be surprised again.

It is a bit of a hassle carrying around 2 phones at the same time. I don’t really need to but I do have some programs and info on my 3G that aren’t on my first gen. I guess that can easily be solved by doing a sync or two but I failed to do so. My 3G is sync’d to my desktop so I think I will sync my first gen to my laptop.

Since I do have my 3G on me, as soon as I hit the border, airplane mode went on. If you leave your phone on while roaming on a different network, you could get charged even when you think you aren’t. For example, if your phone is on, you get a call, you don’t answer it, you will get charged for a minute of roaming. Why? Because your phone is powered on while on a different network, when the call comes in, their network finds your phone, then transmits you back to your voicemail, hence, charges. It seems totally unfair but it is true.

What would would a trip to the USA be without hitting an Apple Store? Well it wouldn’t be the same if I didn’t go to one here. I did manage to find the smallest Apple Store I’ve ever been to so far. This one was at South Center Mall near Seattle and I did pick up a couple goodies. It’s probably a third of the size of the Vancouver store. But I guess it wasn’t quite as small as this other Apple Store I found down here…

Speaking of roaming charges, does anyone know what the DATA roaming charges are in the US with the $30 - 6gig plan rates?

I live in Burnaby BC. It’s like 10 mins away from Vancouver on a good day with not much traffic lol.

    @ generalinq
I believe it is 0.6 cents per KB

    @ AJ
    What do you mean?

Hi ruffdeezy, its been a while since I’ve been here and was wondering, I have a 1.1.4 updated 1st Gen Iphone. If I understand, there isn’t an IPlus or Zphone unlock update to convert my 1.1.4 to 2.0 correct?

If I do in Itunes, I’m assuming I may screw up and brick it?

    Thanks again RD :)

    Hey,
You can use winpwn or pwnage which will unlock your updated first generation at 2.0.

If you use mac, I have a good guide here - http://www.ehphone.ca/2008/07/pwnage/

If you use windows - iclarified.com has good guides there.

One thing though, if you update to 2.0, the network will recognize you have an iPhone and data will be activated, if you don’t have a plan, this will disable it. http://www.ehphone.ca/2008/07/how-to-disable-data-on-your-iphone-or-iphone-3g/
Let me know how it goes for you.
