Firmware 2.0.2 was released today for the iPhone and iPod touch. I must say it was easy updating. I didn’t have to worry about re-jailbreaking or bricking the phone. I can’t imagine having to jailbreak my phone on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. Well maybe not that often but the updates do seem to be coming fast and furious. I am happy as ever with my stock iPhone. Pwnage and WinPwn should be updated soon for those who want the latest version of a jailbroken iPhone.
The latest firmware just fixes bugs? What bugs? I’m not really sure. Hopefully it does fix some of the problems that we have been having such as the 3G network connection problem. That seems to be more of a Rogers/Fido problem but it is hard to tell. It could also have fixed the dropped call problems that some people have experienced although I haven’t myself.
I guess even updating a stock iPhone can become a hassle sometimes, it takes about 20 minutes from start to finish with downloading the file included. Jailbreaking takes a little longer. Well, there is nothing wrong with updating if you are stock, so you might as well go for it.
Once the update was finished, I got a weird error message: The iPhone “iPhone” could not be updated. An unknown error occurred (9).
My iPhone updated just fine though. It is working and the version does say 2.0.2.
Has anyone noticed any changes with 2.0.2? Or are you happy where you are?

Q: ^
A: I just found out about the new update from checking this site, and since I recently got rid of my unlocked first gen I no longer have to wait for jailbreaks. Looks I’ll be updating tonight and will get back to you if I notice anything major.
Changes that I hope to see:
1. More accurate battery strength (heard a few times on people complaining, my first charge it showed a full battery basically until an hour or so until it went down and then showed the 20% left.)
2. GPS is sometimes (approx.10% inaccurate)- faster and more accurate response time.
3. MobileMe stronger syncing (I just got an email saying my account just got an additional 60 days, on top of my prior 30 bonus days, worth of service due to their weak release with lots of bugs and headaches. Originally my .mac account was to expire sept/20/08 but now I have 113 more days or something- Pretty happy about that)
…anyone else?

I haven’t noticed any changes yet but I also hope we see better battry indication or strength in general. I haven’t noticed the GPS being off, then it tries to catch up to the right location. I haven’t really had any problems with mobileme except maybe 1 or 2 outages.

There’s less lag when I open contacts now. It happened with the .0.1 update then it stopped and went back to 5 seconds of lag. Hopefully this doesn’t happen with this update.

I’ve noticed that it took away my keyboard lag. I had major lag before. Also my texts send faster for some reason. Or maybe Rogers just finally fixed their towers here.

changes I have noticed include:
-less keyboard lag
-WAY FASTER CONTACT APP LOADING. before it would take 2 - 4 seconds and once it was open you couldnt scroll for a few seconds, now there is virtually no lag
-faster click noise responce. when I scroll to unlock the sound it makes seems more on par with when I unlock the phone. same goes for when I turn off the phone with the top power button.
thats just what I have noticed

Anyone updated their Jailbroken 2G iPhone from 2.0 to 2.0.2? Did you have to re-JB? Any problems?

@ Cam
I don’t know if they work for 2.0.2 yet

“At a little under 249 MB, the latest iPhone firmware update, version 2.0.2, is about the same size as the previous patch. While many had hoped for fixes to the 3G connectivity issues the device has been experiencing, reports on Apple’s support forums seem to indicate there may be no fix in this patch.
Tests by Apple enthusiast site iPhoneBuzz appeared to claim initially that 2.0.2 did improve 3G functionality, however the methods used have since been called into question by some.
Some users on iPhone enthusiast sites have reported seeing differences in reception, however, but there are also quite a few who just were not sure if anything had changed. No new settings have appeared, according to those who have pored through the update, and some report experiencing reduced typing lag. That problem is part of a bigger issue that many are experiencing with the second generation firmware — general slowness.”

Ha CBC has a story on their website technology section and they are really trying to have an in depth look at the update. It’s a little over the top if you ask me.

I just upgraded my iPhone to 2.0.2 and I’m REALLY unhappy about it. I used to get mail without any problems at all and now I can SOMEtimes get the mail but the phone won’t open it. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
