There is a great website that is specifically meant to test your iPhone’s network speed. It is TestMyiPhone.com. It will tell you what the speeds are on your iPhone for 3G, Edge, and Wifi. I want to see what the results are for ehPhone visitors.
Here’s how to do it:
- Go to www.testmyiphone.com on your iPhone.
- Click on the green ‘Start Test’ button
- Select what network you are on
- Post your results in the comments with the time of your test and the city you are in
- Then we can all compare results
Here are my results:
Speed - 958 / 117
Network - 3G
Location - Whistler, BC
Time - 7:30
The 958 Kbps is the connection speed, the 117 kB/s is the download speed. I guess we are only really interested in the 3G speeds since we already know that Edge is slow and Wifi doesn’t really matter. The key of these tests is to see how fast the 3G network is across the country and if it slows down at certain times during the day. I will be posting more results at different times and locations.

August 31st, 2008 at 10:52 pmI took a bunch of tests to get a good average (I know it provides averages for you but Safari crashed twice on me during the tests so I’m going to go with my own), so I’m going to provide a range here:
Location: Brampton, ON
3G Download Tests (14):
Minimum: ~1.9Mbps
Maximum: ~2.6Mbps
Notes: Tests were more often at or above 2.2Mbps, dropping below 2Mbps only twice in 14 tests.3G Upload tests (3):
Minimum: 256Kbps
Maximum: 261Kbps
Notes: Pretty consistent here, not much variance. Not bad, all things considered. Definitely some solid coverage where I am.
Note that it’s a synthetic test with one file (two when it skips the 512k file for the larger one on the download test) testing maximum throughput, so it’s not really very real-world, where web pages are often loading many dozens of smaller files sequentially. It’s here where the real bottleneck is, establishing those connections to the sites you visit. Great for downloading large images, but connection times — HTTP requests, ACKs, etc., really bring the overall average speed down. Of course, given that it’s faster overall anyway, it’s a damn sight better than EDGE.

September 10th, 2008 at 6:56 pmI like testmyiphone.com, but as a web developer I felt the need to create my own and since there aren’t that many iPhone test sites out there thought there was room for one more.
It’s called My3gSpeed (http://my3gspeed.com)
Also, the server is located in Chicago so it’s Canadian friendly eh
Any feedback is appreciated - info@my3gspeed.com
