It’s been about a week and a half since I got my iPhone. Besides the little crack I in it and the fact that data is not always working and apps keep crashing, it’s been a pretty good experience so far.
I don’t know why this keeps happening but quite frequently I have problems with data loading. It could be because that the Rogers/Fido network is overloaded with 6gb data plans and everyone using it at the same time. If you refresh the page, it seems to work however.
Here are the error messages that come up:
The kcFErrorDomainCFNetwork error 302 seems to come up a lot. The other one once in a while.
Another problem that has started to plague me recently is the fact that apps keep crashing. It happens to Safari and a couple other programs that I got from the App Store. I could just be surfing around and all of a sudden Safari quits and goes back to the home screen. This is also happening when I’m playing some games. I haven’t tested out all of my apps yet but it seems to be happening when playing Texas Holdem intermitently and every time the race begins while playing Cro-Mag rally. It’s starting to get a little frustrating. Maybe it’s happening because I have a couple apps from the US App Store and my iPhone is logged into my Canadian account most often. It’s hard to tell because like I said, it’s only been a week and a half so far.
This is what happens when Safari crashes:
The third problem I keep having is that syncs take half an hour. It shouldn’t take more than 10 seconds to sync unless you are putting a bunch of songs or apps onto your iPhone. Again, maybe it’s because I have US apps. The other thing I don’t get is why the iPhone is constantly backing up itself in iTunes which also takes half an hour. I just end up canceling it before it’s finished because I don’t have the patience. I let it back up fully before, why is it taking so long now?
I read on the Apple support pages that a solution to these problems is to restore your iPhone. That should fix the apps crashing part anyway. Apparently the firmware that shipped with your iPhone is older than what is currently from available from iTunes (5a345 vs 5a347). It’s good that you get to download apps again for free unless songs from iTunes. At least you can’t say it’s because I jailbroke my iPhone that problems are happening.
Here we go with the video of the apps crashing and the restore:
So everything seems to be back to normal now. I’m also happy that my usage stats weren’t reset after restoring the phone.

August 3rd, 2008 at 5:09 amI’ve never seen that data problem error. never happened to me, but the frequent app crashing is inniment. i cant listen to music and surf the web on 3G for more then 5 - 10 mins without it getting incredibly hot and crashing; i have to surf the web without music playing. monkey ball crashs on me some times but iv giving up on it since i cant get past the first world x_x basically after 2 - 4 days of regular use everything starts to slow down and i have to turn off the phone and reboot it. annoying but there’s not much i can do, i love my phone so much that these few annoyances dont bother me that much

August 3rd, 2008 at 6:21 amMine is doing fine after a week of intensive usage. I have one apps that has a bit of issues (Last.FM) and crashes intermittently but really, no big deal..
I have installed almost 15 new apps (free and paid). I’ll check my firmware, maybe i have the most recent already.I love the phone and coming from a Blackberry, i am pleasantly surprised. If Tomtom could come out with their navigation software, i would be a happy camper.

August 3rd, 2008 at 8:05 am1. The crashing etc. with apps is happening with everyone, it’s a 2.0 problem and should be solved with 2.0.1 (hopefully), and definitely by 2.1.
2. Safari crashing is a long-time thing, it happened to V1’s as well IIRC. Not sure what the solution there is.
3. The syncing problem has been solved, when you hook up your iphone goto file -> transfer purchases from ipod. This ‘downloads’ your apps from the iphone to your computer, and makes syncing way faster the next time. I suggest you make a blog post about this one since I’ve heard a lot of success with it.

August 3rd, 2008 at 8:11 amHave you tried holding the on/off switch and power button for ten seconds to force a restart? Seems to have helped my iPod touch. Syncs were taking a half-hour; now it’s less than a minute.

August 3rd, 2008 at 10:03 amI have owned and used a 3G iPhone since 11 Jul 08 and in some respects think that its great BUT, this is a product that was pushed out the door before it was ready and as a result the customers are having to suffer. I have had to restore my iPhone three times in the same number of days recently, each time taking hours to complete ( this along is unacceptable ). The fact that 3rd party apps ( checked and passed by Apple ) have totally screwed up my iPhone underlines the fact that the 3G Iphone is NOT ready. Did Not Steve Jobs claim that Apple’s strategy was to protect the cellphone from being crashed by other developers ? Apple senior executives are guilty of not respecting their own development teams and their customers by pushing a product like the iPhone 3G out the door before its ready. I imagine that some people would accuse Apple of the same thing with respect to MobileMe. To further underline the unreadiness of the iPhone 3G and iTunes App store; I did manage to buy a copy of Netshare in good faith on my part BUT now that I’ve had to perform a restore, I have lost use of what I paid for, again this is unacceptable. Apple, if you put something for sale in the App store and accept my money, then you have an obligation to let use it.
I give the 3G iPhone two thumbs down, people do not buy one until Apple can get the product into some sort of useable state that does not require constant handholding

August 3rd, 2008 at 10:53 amI don’t get the apps crashing issue (but that’s because 2 hours after I got my iPhone an app killed my GPS so I had to restore to 5a347).
I get that first issue though. It usually happens if I have safari open and am walking / driving (well, I’m not driving :P ) from point-A to point-B or if the website I’m accessing is under heavy load and briefly goes down.
That error comes up in Safari if the web server returns something to Safari that it doesn’t like (its up but its slow to respond). It may have something to do with tower hopping or something.
I dunno, it usually temporary though.
Cheers,

August 3rd, 2008 at 11:55 amThe first thing I did when I got my phone was restore to 5a347, I’ve gotten that network connection reset error a few times. Some apps do crash as well. And syncing does take a long time as well.

August 3rd, 2008 at 1:40 pmThere is a hofo thread about the slow backup issue, and it’s most likely cause is numerous application/phone crashes. It explains how to speed up your backups:

August 3rd, 2008 at 10:30 pmI am having different problems on my phone. After getting off the phone with Rogers last night, I did the ENTIRE reset/erase and reformat my phone.
The problem I have been having is actually a number of small problems, such as
1. Without any rhyme nor reason, new text messages will come in and the notification will not ring. Don’t know why, and this happens very randomly. I cannot predict when it might happen, just know it does and has been happening pretty much since the phone came out of the box.
2. The “time since last charge” data will not reset. This is a recent problem.
3. After the whole reset on my phone, I lost all ability to connect to the internet/data today. I could not get email, and safari timed out all the time. The only fix was to re-boot the phone. What is this, a Windoze device?
4. Even with Edge, battery life is maybe one day, with LIGHT usage.
I am working on getting enough infomration together to send the phone back a and obtain a new one in exchange. Sadly, I have also been tossing around the idea of just turfing the whole iPhone experience out. I love the device and what it can do, but I have been very disappointed in the overall performance and working of the phone. In retrospect I miss my version I phone. I actually tried to upgrade my original iPhone to 2.0, but was unable to unlock and activate my phone. The whole ‘pwange’ or whatever it is called program is beyond my meager ability to utilize. I can’t seem to get past the re-boot stage. If I could get my phone, version I, working, I would be very tempted to send my 3G back. With the inability to utilize 3G due to poor battery performance, poor radio performance (dropped calls and the like due to the phone refusing to go to EDGE settings even when the 3G reception is piss poor) and the previously described problems all combine to make me wish I could have my old phone unlocked, permanently and legally (by Apple).
Thanks,
Darren

August 23rd, 2008 at 9:37 amI had the same problems with the gen 1 phone that you guys are describing. I had to take it in to the Apple Store constantly. This most recent time they asked me to bring in the computer it was syncing with. They had previously that week swapped out for a new phone and that didn’t solve it.
When they looked at my iTunes, they said, “Oh, that’s the problem, you have too many 3rd party apps on your phone (I had 85). You can only have 10, or the phone will crash.”
So, there you go, you can fork over your money at the apps store for as many apps as your heart desires, but you can’t have more than 10 of them at a time on your phone.
I upgraded to the 3G 16GB and I have 29 non-Apple apps on the phone right now … so we will see if the crashing continues. [crossing fingers]
