3G was more like 1G today. I can’t believe how many times I got errors trying to load a webpage today. I also didn’t get any push email for half the day. Surprisingly when I turned 3G off and Edge came on, I got all of my emails and the internet was working again. I talked about this problem a couple days ago, but it only seems to be getting worse. Why is this happening?
I am still seeing two major errors on a daily basis when trying to load webpages in Safari:
Error # 1 - kCFErrorDomainCFNetwork error 302
Error # 2 - The Network connection was reset, which sometimes occurs when the server is busy.
I was mainly getting error 1 all day. I know other people were experiencing this too. Tell me where you live and what provider you are on. I’m in Vancouver and on Fido and I had this problem for most of the day. I am curious to find out whether this is a problem for Fido or Rogers or both and what regions this affects or the entire country in general. Maybe we don’t need to ‘Fasten our Seatbelts for the 3G high-speed experience’ as Fido says. Maybe the network isn’t meant to handle this many iPhones and this many 6gb data plans.
This makes you wonder why we pay the system access fee of $6.95 a month. The SAF puts over 50 million dollars into the hands of Rogers every month. You would think with that kind of money, the ‘fee to support ongoing operation, maintenance and upgrading of the wireless network’ would give us the absolute best network in the world. It doesn’t look like that is the case.

I am in Calgary and had a similar bad day yesterday. Experienced the same issues you report here. Only got better last night. I am on Rogers.

I’ve seen the 2nd error once or twice and I’ve never seen the 1st error. When I did see error #2 it was a day or two after launch so I didn’t think much of it. I live in Burlington and work in Toronto.
August 6th, 2008 at 6:36 am
Haven’t seen that error in Ottawa.
August 6th, 2008 at 6:53 am

August 6th, 2008 at 7:34 am
Looks like it is a problem for some, but not all, across the country when on 3G so far on Rogers or Fido.
August 6th, 2008 at 7:37 am

i’m in SE vancouver on rogers network and i was getting the 1st error during the day with edge. i just pwned my 1st gen w/2.0 and had to have the apn settings manually entered with unlockit.co.nz. thought that was the problem, glad to hear its not!

Vancouver. Rogers. iPhone 3G. Same error — kCFErrorDomainCFNetwork error 302.
Added a post to ehMac regarding this issue — click on my name.
Called Rogers yesterday; the error is due to network congestion. Received a $30 credit to my account — equivalent to one month’s data fees.

My iPhone gave me a Network Restricted Error today.
No Network for 2 hours. Booo hhouuuhhhhh!!
But something nice came in the mail today, the screen protector Ruffdeezy sent out to the contest winner a week ago! MUCHO LOVE!
So, that made my day :D

Can anyone answer this question with respect to EDGE and 3G:
is EDGE included in the data plans for 3G with Rogers or will you be paying extra using the EDGE network?
Thanks.
August 6th, 2008 at 11:16 am
same problem in Burnaby/Vancouver yesterday. Very frustrating.
August 6th, 2008 at 11:17 am
Same error here too.
Saskatoon, rogers
Since 2.0.1 also seem to get worse 3G reception. Doesn’t always switch to edge, have to manually switch to edge to get service.
August 6th, 2008 at 11:33 am
Same problems in Edmonton all yesterday .
August 6th, 2008 at 11:40 am

I posted the following on the HowardForums website:
Suggestion to users experiencing data problems:
Contact Rogers, and voice the situation you are experiencing. Ask what they are doing to remedy the situation.
Secondly, contact tech related websites (Engadget, Gizmodo, etc) to spread word of the issues.
Third, contact mainstream media. Etc.
Quite simply, consumer protection.

Our SAF’s are going into general revenue, kind of like what the government does with the GST and those who are familiar with the Coquihalla Hwy Toll. The network needs some major upgrades, they should have the money to do it.

Just got my iphone yesterday and this 3G is pretty much crap for me in Edmonton, most likely going to take advantage of the 15 day return policy from Fido and take the phone back if it does not improve in the next week. Really a pain when it works less then 50% of the time. What a joke $30 a month for 6gig, heck can’t even get a connection
August 6th, 2008 at 5:28 pm
I signed a contract to pay 30 bux am month for data. I do not think that rogers is holding up their end of the contract, so I will me sending THEM a bill for 700 dollars.
August 6th, 2008 at 5:33 pm
rogers rep told me that error 302 is “network congestion” and if it persists, to call back tomorrow.
August 6th, 2008 at 7:11 pm
Those of you that are in Ontario, lucky you, you will have the most stable 3G network in Canada. Why?
Because all the 3G network testing start off in Ontario first then slowly expanding the 3G network to other major provinces. The 3G network testing was completed in around winter 2007 so it is actually VERY new to other major cities.
I won’t be a bit surprise that 3G network is not stable in other areas. Give it some time. :-)
August 6th, 2008 at 10:56 pm
@ PB
Yes edge is definitely included.

Everything is failing, I can’t even get to google sometimes. This is going to take Rogers a LONG time to fix.
Now we know why those data rates never came down, because they couldn’t support the influx of users.
Time to switch to Telus or Bell I guess.

Burnaby / Fido Iphone subscriber.
Had the phone on 3G since Monday Aug 5th. With the exception of Tuesday from 7.30 - 9.30 AM all other times the network was unavailable.
Called FIDO CS twice, both times I was told that they have a problem nation-wide and they are working to fix it.
Funny how they never bother communicating that to customers or provide any sort of update.
Tom had some great suggestions (btw. I voiced my concerns twice to their CS). Perhaps media will also take notice of the issue.

I was on the phone for about 2 hours yesterday, Rogers NOC ended up calling me and troubleshooting with me. I posted the details of it here:
http://www.howardforums.com/showpost.php?p=11495102&postcount=38
It seems that they are not having capacity issues, just some kind of software issue with one or more of their servers that route our traffic.
Sadly after it all seemed resolved last night, it’s happening again this morning.

Concerning the data issues, MacNN managed to put a small story together with some info I sent to them:

Seems to be ok now. I was on the skytrain (Vancouver) this morning and got the 302 error a few times, but in the office (downtown) 3G is working really well, very fast and no errors so far. Oh, I also restarted my phone after the iPhone software update was applied last night when I got into the office this morning, so I am not sure if that is related or not.
But I think the more people call it in, the more likely Rogers is to take this seriously.
August 7th, 2008 at 10:57 am
Has anyone called in and got a credit on your account? I haven’t been having the problem today, I had it for a bit yesterday.
August 7th, 2008 at 11:16 am
Spoke too soon I guess. http://www.globeandmail.com just gave me the error 302. Dammit.
August 7th, 2008 at 2:26 pm
Just talked to Rogers iPhone support. I would recommend anybody having this issue call them and report it. They know of the issue and seemed to have fixed mine. Got a txt message from them after they changed the network config, or so they said, and I haven’t gotten another 302 error since.
August 7th, 2008 at 5:17 pm
I’m having the same issue again today, edge is still working fine. I’ll call in a little later when I have time.
August 7th, 2008 at 8:48 pm
I have witnessed “error 302″ 20+ times on my iPhone today. Pathetic.
August 8th, 2008 at 10:36 am
I bet you feel even more burned about paying the SAF with crap like this happening.
Unacceptable to launch the iPhone and a 6GB data plan when you don’t even have the capacity to support it.
August 9th, 2008 at 12:46 pm
Same problem as everyone else. It would be nice if they at least gave us a status update so time wasn’t wasted trying to get it to work at the user end.
August 14th, 2008 at 12:36 am
I live in Edmonton. I got my 16GB iPhone today from Fido and I haven’t been online for more than 2 minutes within the 7 hour span I’ve had the device. Error #1 seems to be the most common with a “restore” unable to fix the issue. iPhone seems rather crippled without data (wi-fi is excellent).
August 14th, 2008 at 6:55 am
I had an error filled day this morning, from Burlington to Toronto. Tonnes of 302 errors on the GO train, maps would find my location but not display the map :P and weather updates failed constantly.
Rogers iPhone tech support suggest the following:
Hold sleep+home button until shut down and leave it off for 10 minutes (at which point he’d send a “refresh” signal to the phone)
Turn airport mode on for 15 seconds then off again.
Go into Settings -> Reset
Of course it started working fine as soon as I hung up so I didn’t get around to trying any of that.
