A huge win for potential Canadian iPhone owners came today. Rogers has announced that you can a data plan of $30 for 6gb through a limited time offer. That’s huge. Rogers regularly would charge $100 for 6gb. I think you can call 6gb ‘unlimited’. I’m sure this will satisfy most people. This is a ‘promotional’ price ending August 31. I don’t know if that means they will automatically extend it which happens with a lot of promotions. It does look like they are trying to reach some kind of sales record by that time though.

Here is a quote from the press release:

TORONTO, July 9 /CNW/ - In anticipation of iPhone 3G launch on July 11,

Rogers Wireless today announced plans to open the doors of select Rogers Plus
retail stores across Canada in advance of regular hours. Starting at 8:00 am
July 11, Canadians will be able to purchase the new iPhone 3G at special
launch day events to be held at six Rogers Plus stores across the country. Be
among the first in Canada to get the next generation iPhone 3G and have the
choice of a 6GB data plan through a limited time promotional price offer.
“As Canada’s leading wireless carrier, Rogers is excited to bring iPhone
3G to Canadians even sooner, allowing our customers to be amongst the first in
the world to experience this amazing mobile innovation,” says John Boynton,
Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer, Rogers Wireless. “To
celebrate its launch on Canada’s fastest wireless network, we’re rolling out
the red carpet with special events at six Rogers Plus stores and a limited
time price promotional data offer from coast-to-coast.”
iPhone 3G combines all the revolutionary features of iPhone with 3G
networking that is twice as fast(*) as the first generation iPhone, built-in GPS
for expanded location based mobile services, and iPhone 2.0 software which
includes support for Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync and runs the hundreds of
third party applications already built with the recently released iPhone SDK.

This means that Rogers actually listened to us! Our efforts, the petition, the emails, and frankly the outrage has caused Rogers to offer us something that shows a complete reversal on their part. I guess they were a little afraid that thousands would hold out on buying an iPhone. I feel sorry for the few who already switched to Telus or Bell in protest of the plans though.

It looks like you can just add this data plan to your existing voiceplan. There are a few things you need to make sure of then. Make sure your visual voicemail works. It is available as a seperate option but you just have to pay for it. This doesn’t solve the high cost of the value packs, but does give us good value for money on the data plans.

Rogers has also confirmed that the iPhone will go on sale at 8am in select stores. They have even updated their website to show stores which will be carrying the iPhone. Finally we get some more information. I’m still waiting to find out what my upgrade eligibility is but as far as these plans go, I couldn’t be happier. It still looks like Fido is behind the times a bit. At least they changed the design of their website.

You can even buy your iPhone online! No word yet on activations then, you might have to do a pick up in store or activte in store.

Starting July 11, iPhone 3G will be available at participating locations
across Canada, including select Rogers Plus, Rogers Video, and Rogers Wireless
retail locations and at the following specially selected authorized Rogers
Wireless dealers: WirelessWave, TBooth and Wireless etc. iPhone 3G can also be
purchased online at www.rogers.com and through Rogers’ customer service at
1-888-764-3771. For a complete store listing, visit
http://your.rogers.com/mq/mqlocator.asp. Due to anticipated high demand, there
is a maximum purchase of two iPhone 3G per customer.

woot! i think 30$ for 6 gigs of data + 25$ for a cheap voice plan + 10$ for alots of text + 6.95$ + 0.5$ = 81.87 (including tax) - 15% for all my other rogers stuff =D. im looking at about 69.59 including tax for a great plan that fits every single one of my needs, awesome…!!!

  2. 2. ruffdeezy Says:

I know this is crazy. Finally we get what we need!

  3. 3. Flop Says:

OMFG I CANT BREATHE LIKE IS THEIS HAPPING? But what i want to kno is it possible going over 6GB?

  4. 4. Brock Says:

wahoooooooooo, now i just need to figure out my eligibility for and upgrade, this is great news, i almost cant believe it

  5. 5. Maxime Scrocca Says:

hell ya im getting an iphone !! woot finally we made a difference whit the petition i guess ^^

  6. 6. theo Says:

i guess this means i should ine up earlyer ;/ lots more people gunna feel malot more temped to get the iphone :P

  7. 7. ruffdeezy Says:

    @ Flop
I don’t think it’s possible to go over 6gb. Well nothing is impossible but this would take surfing and watching youtube for many many hours a day. It should be plenty so that you never have to worry about your usage.

  8. 8. Bryan Says:

I took a vacation day on Friday, little b!tches!!! LOL I am getting it! Where are we gonna start lining up? I am on the phone now yelling at Fido lammers who are cluless about the Rogers news. I will be really pissed off if Fido does not get this offer.

  9. 9. theo Says:

    @bryan
im lining up at 5pm thursday. the beat people like you who took off friday :P cuse you still have to go home and get showered up and ready :P so i assume people should line up as early as you can. i also herd from a fido store they get shipment #2 on the following monday. july 14th, 2008. so remember we have till the end of august to get this deal so i wont be upset if i miss out. but i dont plan on missing out >.<

  10. 10. matt Says:

I phoned Rogers because a $30 nearly unlimited Data plan is too good to pass up and I wanted to know where Visual Voicemail sat in relation. Supposedly there is no confirmation that Visual Voicemail will be available on anything outside those original “high-value” $60 - $115 iPhone plans. So if you do a Voice and Data, any essentials with “Enhanced” Voicemail or “Enhanced” Voicemail on it’s own does not constitute automatic Visual Voicemail. I was told that this could all change before launch as no official pricing guide has been passed around… Not yet?! It’s less than 2 days to go!

If Visual Voicemail ends up being a $7 - $15 separate charge, that would be a deal breaker.

  11. 11. mobile23 Says:

wohoo….. BIG WIN for both Rogers and all customers. is Fido getting the same 6G for $30 option too?

  12. 12. ruffdeezy Says:

Yep Fido is getting the exact same stuff

  13. 13. Harith Says:

Still not getting one. To hell with Rogers.

  14. 14. Dan Says:

Will be getting one for sure.
I’m on the orig city fido ($40 month, no system access fee).

This is enough to get me to start paying the system access fee as my contract expires in November and can be renewed anytime 6 months or less before expiry.

    I probably won’t line up 12 hours before…. maybe 4 :)

  15. 15. Bryan Says:

@Ruffdizzy how do you know Fido has the same deal?

@Theo, how do we line up for Fido? All their stores are in a shopping mall. Althou, I guess I could hide in the washroom over night and bolt out the moment Fido Booth opens. But seriously TO area, is there a Fido store that is not inside a mall?

  16. 16. Bryan Says:

Yup Fido web site has it!!! It really is $30 for 6GB add on to voice plan. Question what is “in-market plan”? Why do I feel I will get shafted with my EPP?

  17. 17. B Says:

    @matt

over on howardforums in the iPhone FAQ that was posted yesterday, it says Visual Voicemail can be added separately from any data plan: $8

one caveat: if you have regular voicemail e.g. built into another value pack, you have to get the regular VM excluded, I guess it conflicts

anyhow this $30/6GB is great news.
previously I was thinking the free hotspot access included in the iPhone plans looked useful, but that’s now negated I think with 6B data. so no need to think about the $60 or $75 iphone plans anymore.

    for me, maybe $25 Mega25 voice + $30/6GB data + $7CID + $8 VVM

I’ll likely phone in my order, I’m doing a corp upgrade, they said 3-5 business days, I’m in no hurry, and can’t afford to miss work to line up all day!

  18. 18. Chase Says:

what are some voice plans? rogers website is an absolute labyrinth lmao…. Im still prob gonna go with fido because of the per second But I may not if theres a good enough Voiceplan now.

  19. 19. Chase Says:

Ill probly get the 30$ 6 gigs data, 15$ value pack with the visual voicemail caller ID and the 2,500 text messages, and the 40$ mega Incomming plan with unlimted incomming/nights and weekends and 200 anytime minutes.

    30+15+40+7+tax

Im looking at about 100/month.. about what i wanted to pay for what I am getting… Ill still probly use FIDO for the per second billing IDK tho there may be better value packs etc.

  20. 20. Dan Says:

There doesn’t appear to be any value packs which include visual voicemail

  21. 21. Bryan Says:

Did they not say VisualVoice will work with ANY plan that has voice mail on it?

  22. 22. Harith Says:

Everyone’s lying down and letting the Rogers machine roll over them again.

    It’s so sad.

  23. 23. Dan Says:

    @Harith
Why is this the rogers machine rolling over us? Even compared to the USA, this seems like a reaonsable deal?

    EXISTING:
$40.00 unlimited voice, city fido, no system access fee
$11.00 value pack (voicemail, call display, text, who called, mobile backup)
    $0.50 911 fee
    TOTAL: $51.50/month.

    NEW:
    $40.00 unlimited voice, city fido
    $6.95 system access fee
    $0.50 911 fee
    $11 value pack
$30 data 6GB (pretty much can be considered unlimited for most people)
    TOTAL: $88.45

I’d say under $90 for unlimited voice calls and almost unlimited data is a pretty good deal. I’ll be with Fido until someone else can offer better.

  24. 24. Harith Says:

Because after August 31 this no longer will be a valid deal. Then it’s back to the same old same old, but hey, everyone’s happy because they get to use 6 GB for thirty bucks a month for the next three years, who cares about those who didn’t grab an iPhone during that period. They get fucked around by Rogers.

  25. 25. Harith Says:

It’s so easy to placate the angry masses. Yet they don’t look beyond the smoke and mirrors of Rogers’ PR stunt.

  26. 26. Noone important Says:

Not to be the stick in the mud, but perhaps it’s not a good idea to proclaim “Rogers gets it right”, especially considering I’m fairly certain that Roger’s employees definitely read this site and RuinedIphone.com.

Why settle for this? Why not appear to unhappy with even this and perhaps they will bend even further?

  27. 27. Bryan Says:

@Harit, we don’t know what will happen after Aug 31

  28. 28. Bryan Says:

@Harith, this is a good deal man! For those who can get it now, they should–I will!

  29. 29. Harith Says:

Either they go back to their high value packs or they redo their packs and make everyone who bought the $30/6GB feel like complete fools.

    Either way, we lose.

  30. 30. Chase Says:

@Dan, were is the city fido shit, can you link us? theres notihng on there website.. i really want that exact plan lol and nights/weekends start at 7 with fido? or 6?

  31. 31. Dan Says:

    @Chase
City Fido came out years ago. It is a grandfathered plan, before Rogers bought fido. No evenings and weekends. It’s just unlimited calls, anytime (actually, the fine print says 5000 anytime minutes I think).

HOWEVER, a fido rep at a kiosk at a store said the data plans that go with the iphone might not be available for city fido customers, even if I do start paying the system access fee. He said they’d know more tomorrow. That sounds a little odd. In the past, Fido has always made it seem like as long as you pay the system access fee, everything about the city fido plan is on par with other plans concerning eligibility for promo’s and upgrades. I’m keeping my fingers crossed. If I can’t get the $30/6GB plan to go with my iphone, it’s not worth me starting to pay the system access fee. Bummer.

  32. 32. Bryan Says:

THIS JUST IN–READ THIS!!! Facts or rumor: I talked to Fido store at Eathon’s (TO) and No.1 they will get 180 iPhones on Friday AND No.2 since my plan is less than $30 a month (I have EPP $17.50) the price of my iPhone will $50 more than regular! Still does not break the deal, but GOD DAMN Rogers, why must you slap me for $50???

  33. 33. Harith Says:

    Yeah, Friday’s gonna be funny.

  34. 34. Dan Says:

Is anyone else on city fido? Have they heard anything about what other “special” charges might be faced with someone on city fido?

  35. 35. noah Says:

oh, shit, i’ll be out of canada til aug31 -_-…so sad…

if i miss out this good deal, will i get fcuked by rogers again?

    no idea….

what i wanna to know is if i’m eligible to upgrade !!!! i’ll leave on july 17th….before that, i need to get an iphone !!!!!

  36. 36. winnie Says:

I think this is for Toronto’s area. I’ve checked the BC rogers web, $30 is NOT available.

  37. 37. Harith Says:

    Dan: http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1394943

Ask yourself if it’s worth it to lose your great plan for a friggin glorified phone.

  38. 38. ruffdeezy Says:

    Same on fido
    http://micro.newswire.ca/release.cgi?rkey=1607093113&view=58511-2&Start=0

  39. 39. chris Says:

i just called and tried to add this to my existing plan. its not available until july 11 but will be available to any plan, that means those of us not upgrading to the 2nd gen can still get it added… sucks for those signing on after aug. 31. sorry if any of this is a repeat.

  40. 40. blameboy Says:

Just to let you guys know. Currently the $30 6GB offer ends on August 31. You can just add this plan without any voice plan. It will not included Visual Voicemail. It is $8 extra unless you sign up for the iPhone plans.

There are 6 retail stores within Canada that’s going have a special early 8:00am opening event which can get you free breakfast and some goodies. One in Toronto, the other in Vancouver.

PS: Look at Telus/Bell. They are charging all incoming text messages now. LOL!

  41. 41. Joe Says:

Enjoy being locked in for 3 years you losers. Unlimited data wasn’t the only thing people were fighting for. The plans still suck.

Enjoy what you think is a good deal… you’re all delusional. No phone is worth this. I’m a huge Apple fan but Rogers has totally ruined the iPhone in Canada.

I’m hopeful that the GSM spectrum will get more competition. There’s no reason you can’t wait. Stop ploughing money into Rogers.

  42. 42. blameboy Says:

Sorry that I mention some of the things that’s already been said above.

Anyways, you don’t need to wait in line at retailers to get iPhone. You can call in or go online to sign up a 3 years term and Fido/Rogers will ship you the iPhone. Once you get your phone, you just need to hook it up to your computer and use iTune to unbrick (unlock) your phone.

Every time you change your Sim card, you need to unbrick it again.

  43. 43. noah Says:

    @ Joe

Yep, a good data plan is not only thing we were fighting for. And I really don’t care about the 6gb deal cuz I will probably miss it out. However, I have to say, $30 for 6gb is really the greatest plan rogers ever offered, even though it will just last for about 2 months.

We don’t know what will happen after 8.31. Rogers needs to remove “high value” from the names of their plans or to fix their plans.

I’m not getting the iphone by 7/11. wait for them releasing the damn upgrade eligibility announcement..

  44. 44. noah Says:

at least, I need to know what will lock me in for 3 years is really a good experience.

  45. 45. Hyperextension Says:

It is pretty easy to find out if you qualify for an upgrade. Log onto your Rogers account online and go to manage your services. Select your phone and then click on “Upgrade my Phone”. If it lets you select a phone on the next screen, you are eligible. If you are not eligible for an upgrade at this time, it will tell you.

I did this and also confirmed that I am eligible in-store when I put a deposit down for my iPhone.

  46. 46. Brian Says:

I will now be getting an iPhone on July 11.

Another way to tell if you’re upgrade eligable is you will receive countless annoying phone calls from Rogers’ call centre asking you if you want to have unlimited rogers to rogers for 36 month contract, then try and tell you that if you don’t re-sign, they’ll cancel your service when your contract expires.

I’ve had them call 15 times in the last 30 days.

  47. 47. Treef Says:

This is an important detail that may be getting overlooked. I found this on iClarified:

“This seems like another trick Rogers is playing on its Canadian consumers. The terminology “in-market” most likely means that you will not be able to keep your existing plan as it likely is out-of-market. Rogers still will not offer an unlimited data plan limiting the iPhone’s internet use to just browsing. They also are still requiring a 3 year contract.”

  48. 48. iPhone Canada Says:

Awesome. Only problem will be the lines. I’m setting up my tent on Bank Street tomorrow - I’ll post some video of the crowds and marshmallow roasts on my blog.

  49. 49. John Says:

It’s still not unlimited. Might I remind everyone that Fido (before Rogers bought them) was offering unlimited data for $50/month.

They should have 6 gigs for $30 and unlmited for $60!

  50. 50. Dan Says:

Have to agree on that. If they offer 6 gig’s for $30, they may as well offer unlimited for $60. How many people are really going to go past 6 gig’s? I don’t even know if I do that at home!

That being said, this great little 6gb for $30 promo only seems to be available to people who have plans that are “in market”. I asked if my city fido plan could have to option added, and they said no, because it is no longer offered.

  51. 51. Anon Says:

This is potentially good news, but I’ve got a few questions I’ll be asking before I sign on the dotted line:

    1) If I was to sign a 3 year contract, is the 30 dollar data rate set for the full 3 years? Or is it one of those “30 dollar introductory rate” plans, where the first 6 months is 30 bucks and then it goes up to some insane amount?
    2) to use the unlimited data, do you have to access the internet through some bullSh*t rogers ‘web portal’ or can you use safari to surf on the iphone as if I’m at home on my powerbook, as apple intends it? Real internet surfing?

If the answers to these questions are positive, I’ll be buying an iphone. I know some people are pissed that others are ‘giving in’ to the Rogers machine, but this price point suits my needs, and was what I was hoping for all along, so I’ll take it. However if the fine print in that contract yields more bull, then I won’t. Regardless of how happy or not happy people are, this is still a small victory for consumers. People should recognize this. You can still be unhappy with the offerings, but at least recognize that this is a step in the right direction. Because it is.

I’ve worked for both Telus and Bell dealers in the past (well directly for Bell) and I know how both companies work internally. Everyone has good experiences with some, and bad experiences with others. I personally have a severe disliking for Bell out of the two. They see their customers as numbers and the sales staff are trained to milk the consumer as much as possible, almost to the point of dishonesty. Telus was a little bit better in caring for their customers. Not a lot, but a bit. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t like either. In fact I don’t like any cell carriers period. Their business model, and the entire contract system/comission sales system is garbage and horrible if you ask me. But I need cell coverage, so… yeah.

Just make sure to get everything in WRITING. If the sales rep tells you one thing about your plan, and you sign your life away for three years, then find out that the sales rep was lying or was wrong about your plan details, you’re screwed and have no way of fighting it. Be nice to the sales reps because they have crappy jobs but get *EVERYTHING* in writing. I think most people know to do this anyways, but it’s important. And read ALL of that fine print. ALL of it. please!!!!

  52. 52. Harith Says:

Rogers apparently has the right to change that 30 dollar fee whenever they want.

    So:

Before you rush out and gleefully sign whatever Rogers and Fido sticks under your eager signing hand… READ THE DAMN CONTRACT.

  53. 53. Maxime Scrocca Says:

    @ Anon
    2) to use the unlimited data, do you have to access the internet through some bullSh*t rogers ‘web portal’ or can you use safari to surf on the iphone as if I’m at home on my powerbook, as apple intends it? Real internet surfing?

dont worry about this apple dont want any compagnies to touch their firmware , the only thing allowed is locking but no firmware change. so yes you’l have the safari browser on your phone.

  54. 54. Harith Says:

    Posted to howardforums then disappeared:

*50.00 downgrade fee on plans of 30 or less anytime in the 3 year term. Very important.. plan has to be $31.00 or HIGHER to qualify for the 199/299. a 30.00 price plan will not qualify as it’s 30 or less…

*MSD coded accounts do not quality. MSD qualifications are coming shortly in the next few weeks.

  55. 55. Bryan Says:

Ok, I am still saying this: Get a brand new contract, new number, cheapest plan, just get the phone, then cancel contract, pay $400 and keep the phone!!!!!!! Mark my words–that is the best plan!!!

  56. 56. Dan Says:

    @Bryan
Agree with you on that. But to get the $30/6GB promo plan, i think you’ll have to at the least lock into some kind of agreement.

  57. 57. Tony Says:

    Bryan:
Are you saying get the contract and the iphone @ launching date, or whatever date before August 31st, and then cancel the contract right away after u get the phone, pay the 400 buck and then sign up that 30 bucks data plan?

  58. 58. Bryan Says:

@Tony ABSOLUTELY!! They are not going to give you 6GB for $30 without a catch. I am already hearing about VisualVoice being $8 on top of that $30 for 6GB.

  59. 59. Bryan Says:

@Tony, I think $30 data plan will be able to be cancelled. without penalty and I would be able to play with it, as in add it on this month, take it off the next, until there is a good plan. I still don’t think i will be doing much web surfing on a 3.5″ screen. Not more than 100 MB a month after the inital AWE effect wears off.

  60. 60. Tony Says:

hmm, i think you have to keep it for 15 days right, otherwise you have to bring the phone back, gona have to take a look at their cancellation policy

  61. 61. Bryan Says:

Tony: you are right there is 15 days return policy, but whats the difference? So return it after 16 days and if they bill you for one month, so be it–last penny they will get due to their stupid policies.

  62. 62. Tony Says:

so do you think the iphone is coming unlocked? as i suspect it should be, i will wait out for a week :) let’s hope the best :)

  63. 63. noah Says:

    @Bryan

I did some calculations of getting the iphone by cancelling the contract. that’s

    $199 plus tax + $50 (activation fee)+[ $60(monthly plan)+$6.95(system access fee)+$0.5(911 em-fee)] plus tax + $400 (ECF) plus tax=$796.42 (i’m not sure if there’s a activation fee) .

you spend almost $800 on just a phone, and for example, u’re still gonna pay the monthly rate like $30 for 3 years. so the total amount will be $796.42 + ($30+6.95+0.5)plus tax x 36= $2302.84

It’s not cheap, and if you wish to use another GSM network ( traveling to us ) , you have to unlock your iphone. it means you lose your warranty.

on the other hand, if get the iphone through the HUP program, the total amount will be much cheaper ($1784.86) than that one. but, again, you will be locked in by them for 3 years….

  64. 64. Bryan Says:

Noah: there’s an error in your calculation Noah. I don’t have to spend $30 per month for 3 years after I cancel! Assume using only WiFi and my regular voice plan ($17.50/month). I can play with plans as they do down in price and they will never be able to lock me in for 3 years!

  65. 65. Bryan Says:

@Noah. Besides how long before the Italian guy (ziphone) does not unlock firmware 2.0? He already has it!

  66. 66. iPhone Canada Says:

If you’re just going to use the wifi - get an iPod touch

  67. 67. Bryan Says:

iPod touch??? You can make phone calls with it out of range of WiFi?

  68. 68. Tony Says:

the catch is you have a phone with ipod touch capability…

  69. 69. Tony Says:

heh.. i would agree with Bryan on this one :)

  70. 70. noah Says:

    @Bryan

Yep,,you’re so lucky having such a great voice plan. is that the EPP?? probably it’s out of market already.

In my case I have to spent $25 on my monthly rate with tax and the damn SAF. so, for me, getting into the HUP program will be much cheaper. Don’t get me wrong, i don’t wanna be locked by them, either… damn it!!

I know there’re some unlocked stuff ready. but, is there a way that unlocking iphone without losing warranty? that’s the point.

btw, i dont care about the 3G network. in my range, there’re full of wifi spot. Wifi for me is totally fine.

@noah, Yes, I have EPP. 200 mins, unlimited eve and weekends starting at 5pm built into the plan–I am NOT FREAKING LOSING MY VOICE PLAN!!!

unlocking, looses warranty? can’t be! ziphone stuff can be revered in one click. actually use iTunes to revert to factory status. I don’t see how.

  72. 72. Bryan Says:

I used ziphone stuff to unlock my iPhone v1.0. Worked like a charm every time. It was a one click solution. If not ziphone, then somebody else will unlock it!!! Matter of time! ALSO: I refuse to believe that data plans will not come down within 3 years. At that time I want to have a freedoom to pick and choose. Also I want the iPhone bacause I see a future in it–5 years from now, iPhone or a device in such size will be everything we need–take it home, cradle it to large screen and keyboard and its your desktop, take with with, put it in your car–music, navigation, streaming radio, take it to work….. you get the idea. I firmly beleive this will be the future. I also want to develop for iPhone 3rd party apps.

  73. 73. Hyperextension Says:

@Bryan. Totally with you. I feel the same way about the iPhone. It has definitely opened the door for some amazing things and I think it is the future as well. Good on you to want to develop APPS as well. Everything else aside on the iPhone, 3rd party apps are a BIG reason I love the iPhone. It really shows what an iPhone can do, and really, as long as there are people dreaming stuff up, it will only get better.

Time will tell, but for myself, I do not see me owning any other cellphone within the next 10 years. I have tried them all (regular cells, Treo, Blackberry, HTC) and loved most of them, but the iPhone takes the cake for sure. One GREAT thing about the iPhone is (esp now that it is legit in Canada) is updates from Apple. If they want to add a feature to the phone, its an update. Most other phones cannot do this, and in order to get the next great feature, you have to buy a new phone.

  74. 74. SPQR Says:

6 GB is nothing. This thing is a phone and portable entertainment device and that means lots of data today (Google movies sizes on iTunes) and even more in the future. 3 years is an eon on the Internet, so don’t assume that a cap that is okay today will be tomorrow.

The Toronto Star claimed that Rogers “caved” into pressure. They did not, they laid out a bait and switch and a lot of you are falling for it. What will make Rogers cave and produce reasonably priced plans with reasonable data options is to NOT BUY THIS PHONE. All you need to do is wait. If sales are flat, Rogers will have to respond.

  75. 75. Bryan Says:

@Hyperextension, re upgrades and Apple improoving firmware: iPhone 3G has EVERYTHING a hardware device needs!!! Fast data pipe, real GPS, 8GB to 16GB, kick ass audio (I hear this one surpasses the old one), lighning fast CPU and GPU, accelerators, tilt…… I have to stop blogging now, I got to go line up! I will either get the iPhone 3G tomorrow, or I will get arrested by security for hiding in mall’s washroom to beat the rush tomorrow morning.

  76. 76. Hyperextension Says:

May not be the right thread, but here goes.

I just got off the phone with my Rogers rep (where I put a deposit for a pre-order) and she asked me to come in after noon to avoid the rush. They have my iPhone set aside, so no worries.

I am an existing customer and I am eligible for an upgrade, but she could NOT tell me how much it will cost me. Apparently Rogers upgrades are all in tiers so even though you may be eligible for an upgrade, it still may cost you more than the $299 which SUCKS BIG TIME.

She said they are not allowed to disclose anything until tomorrow. So I dont know how much it is going to cost me until I am there!!! I can see it now. Lots of PISSED OFF existing customers, who are eligible for an upgrade, but at a lower (or higher) tier and having to fork out $600 for the phone AFTER standing in line for 3 hours.

Rogers baffles me man. They just dont seem to get it. One second good news, the next second, shit news. How can they expect to keep people happy??

I think there will be some stress and difficulties for some in line at Rogers tomorrow.

  77. 77. Hyperextension Says:

Further…how pissed would you be if you are eligible for an upgrade, stand in line for 3+ hours, get to the counter and the $299 (or $199) you thought you were going to pay is actually $600????

All this because Rogers will NOT disclose pricing for upgrades until LAUNCH DAY!!

Sorry for the multiple posts. Overall I am happy, but this little glitch pisses me off to no end.

  78. 78. Tony Says:

:( i just sign a 3 year contract for the EPP program :( in may, b4 that i have no contract… :( i am not eligible for an upgrade what so ever… :( which sux :(

    bye bye iphone… :|

  79. 79. Dan Says:

    @Hyperextension

It is ridiculous. I completely agree. It is about 1/2 day before the iphone comes out. I called Fido 20 minutes ago and they told me I could renew and add the the $30/6GB plan to my city fido account no problem tomorrow. I called back 10 minutes later to clarify, and the woman told me I couldn’t renew at all and my plan wasn’t even eligible for the $30/6GB. Ironically, I just got an answer to an email I sent on the web yesterday (at least it’s something in writing which might be helpful when speaking to retentions tomorrow which is where I can see this going.)

    HERE IS THE MSG:

    Hello,

We would like to thank you for visiting our Fido Web site.

Existing customers in their renewal window can upgrade to iPhone 3G.
They will need to check their upgrade eligibility, but a customer on
with a monthly service fee that is over $30 for example can upgrade to
iPhone 3G at $199 (for the 8GB model). (You are eligible)

As you’re a Fido customer, you can also use your FidoDollars towards the
    purchase of iPhone 3G.
You may renew your Fido Agreement up to 6 months before its expiry date
to benefit from another handset upgrade, and you may do this in store.

You will be able to keep you City Fido plan, the commitment will be
changed to a 3 year agreement. (ask the rep to override the 2 year
    agreement)

Should you require further assistance for this or any other matter, you
may contact Customer Service at 1 888 481-3436 weekdays from 8:00 am to
9:00 pm and weekends from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Our representatives will
    be pleased to assist you.

    Sincerely,

    Fido Internet Consultant

6 gigs is a ton. When the average use on the first iPhone was only 100mb a month, 6 gigs is a lot. Granted the 3G will make you use more but 60 times more?

  81. 81. Hyperextension Says:

@Dan. That is some promising news. I confirmed online and in person that I am eligible for an upgrade with Rogers so hopefully it holds true. I use my phone for work and we have 6 cells on the account and have been customers for nearly 10 years now, so that should help out. Plus, in total our monthly bills are around the $1500 per month. I’m not saying my company is special, but if we aren’t qualifying customers for upgrades at the $199/$299 price then who is? And how much do you need to spend in a month to qualify?

  82. 82. Tony Says:

:( do me a favour and ask how much it would cost to actually buy an iphone, if one is not qualified.. :P since i won’t be able to go line up tomorrow :(

  83. 83. noah Says:

    @ tony

you can just make the iphone with ECF as the non-contract iphone. it will be totally $796.42.

some countries’ GSM providers have released their non-contract iphone prices around that price. so that’s it.

  84. 84. Bryan Says:

@Hyperextension, just talked to a Fido rep. If you are eligable for upgrade, prices are $199 and $299!

  85. 85. Bryan Says:

AT ALL: if your plan is under $30 (with Fido atleast) you pay $50 on top of the iPhone you want!

  86. 86. Bryan Says:

@noah, now you are seeing it my way!!! I am so doing just that!

  87. 87. Bryan Says:

@Tony, don’t be sad. You know you can get the phone tomorrow. Think of $800 for iPhone in two installments. One now open new contract price and one month of a cheep plan, and second installment in 30 days to cancel contract and pay $400 fine, but you end up keeping the phone. There I even made you a payment plan. Rogers/Fido should pay me for this shit. Actually they would not! The worse thing you can do to them is what I just told you to do! This is my way of “hacking” their corporate system of greed! Things that I do can be described as SuperHero-like even!

  88. 88. noah Says:

oh, damn it!! i’m freaking confused by Fido.

I just call the CSR 1 min ago to ask them if i am eligible to upgrade to iphone 3g now. They told i would be ok tomorrow and there’s no downgrade fee for the plan less than $30.

    i’m totally confused by them.

  89. 89. noah Says:

    @ bryan

Yep, at the beginning i was totally on your way. but, since i dont have the epp plan, after i did some calculatons about my case, i choose to upgrade to iphone at the end… so sad, i will be locked in by them for another 3 year…

  90. 90. Anonymous Says:

    Guys and Gals,

You’re being fooled by Rogers! It’s not $30 for 6GB it’s $30 for 300 MB. Look at their data table on their site. It states that it’s $100 for 6GB. I see nowhere stating $30 for 6GB.

  91. 91. ruffdeezy Says:

    It’s a special promotion

  92. 92. ruffdeezy Says:

How did everyone make out yesterday?
