I have tested the iPhone Pwnage Tool 2.0 from the iPhone Dev team on my first generation iPhone. IT WORKS!
Please note that this tool will unlock, jailbreak, and update your first gen iPhone to firmware 2.0. It will also jailbreak your iPod touch and iPhone 3G. It will not unlock your iPhone 3G. I had absolutely no problems upgrading to 2.0 but remember you do so at your own risk. This program is for Mac only. The Windows version, winPwn, has not be released yet.
You don’t have to do anything to your iPhone before you begin (you don’t have to restore it first). Just follow the steps from any firmware - 1.0.2, 1.1.1, 1.1.2, 1.1.3, and 1.1.4 can go straight to 2.0 because you are restoring the phone with the custom firmware you have built.
Here is an instruction guide and video:

Full Instruction Guide:
Step 1
Download the Pwnage Tool
You can download the pwnage tool from the iPhone Dev team’s website. Their server load is very high right now so just be patient if it takes a bit of time.
Step 2
Connect your iPhone to the computer and open iTunes. A message will come up saying that a new version is available. Select ‘Download Only’. It will take a few minutes to download because the file size is over 200mb.
Step 3
Download the 3.9 and 4.6 bootloaders
Once extracted, you can just place the two files on your desktop. When in step 4, the program will tell you that the files are not found, select no, then it will let you browse for them.
Step 4
Open the Pwnage Tool. Select iPhone. The program will automatically find the ispw firmware file you downloaded from iTunes and the bootloaders you downloaded. A message will pop up asking “Are you a legit iPhone user? yes or no” Select no to unlock your iPhone, yes to not unlock it (legit means on AT&T…). The program will then build the custom firmware. It takes a few minutes so be patient. It will then ask if you have pwned your iPhone before. I used Ziphone last time so I hit no.
Step 5
Enter DFU mode
Follow the instructions on screen to enter DFU mode. If you don’t get it right, just try again.
Step 6
Restore your iPhone. Hit and hold the option button and then click restore. This will let you manually select your custom firmware and the restore file. Once this is done, you will be finished! This will take about 10 minutes.
Step 7
Test everything out to make sure it works but you are finished and enjoy firmware 2.0 unlocked!
Once you are done iTunes will ask you if you want to set up your iPhone as new or restore from a previous sync. Select set up as new iPhone. I had hit restore the first time around but then my mobileme wouldn’t push, so I restored with the same firmware again, selected set up as new phone, now the push works fine.
Important note:
Using this tool will automatically enter the correct edge settings for your first gen iPhone for Rogers or Fido in. This means that if you don’t have a data plan you can incur charges. This is very important that you take these steps as listed here.
Thanks to the iPhone dev team for this great program.
Update - July 20
Pwnage tool 2.0.1 released, it fixes a few bugs. You can download it here. If everything is done for you already using 2.0, no need to do it again. If you had a number of problems and you still aren’t unlocked/jailbroken, try 2.0.1.
Let me know how things go for you. I will try and answer any questions you have.

That’s a great question, but I’m not sure. I haven’t heard of anyone trying it. I don’t have a pc anymore so I can’t. If you do try it, let me know how it goes@ Wassim
Yep everything is ok. I’m using mobileme and having a little problem with that but otherwise everything is good. -

July 20th, 2008 at 12:38 pmI, too, am having problems like Trafalgirl where I keep getting the message saying that entering DFU mode failed. I don’t see a timer on screen…
Right after it asks me if my phone’s been pwned before (I click No because I don’t know if it has), it automatically says that entering DFU mode has failed. It doesn’t prompt me to power off.
What can I do? Please help me.

July 20th, 2008 at 1:08 pmOk - so I should put the phone into recovery mode before doing running the pwnage? Sorry - I feel like an idiot…
-
17. Tina Says:
July 20th, 2008 at 1:13 pmOk so I’ve got iTunes to notice it in recovery mode, like the YouTube video you posted says, but Pwnage still says it failed getting into DFU mode. What now? Do I have to redo something again?
-
18. ruffdeezy Says:
July 20th, 2008 at 1:23 pmI’m not sure what the problem is, when I went into DFU mode, it worked fine for me. I couldn’t go into DFU mode a few times, but it eventually worked for me. I will try and see if I can find any solution.
I’m not sure if putting it into DFU mode first then running the program will help, but it’s worth a try I guess.

19. ruffdeezy Says:
July 20th, 2008 at 1:56 pm@ Tina, Trafalgargirl
Try create the firmware without the iPhone connected to pwnage, then close pwnage, put the iPhone in dfu mode, open iTunes, restore to the firmware it created. -
20. Tina Says:
July 20th, 2008 at 2:01 pmAlright after much trial and error I FINALLY got it to work! I had to restart Pwnage in DFU mode and then turn on, then off the iPhone again. That’s the only way I could get Pwnage to prompt me to turn off my phone. So, I’m at 2.0 now, and I turned off my EDGE settings using OpenSSH (although I didn’t need to because when I checked, the settings were already what I previously had to turn off my settings). Anyways, the point? I’m up and running with 2.0.. Hooray!!!

July 20th, 2008 at 3:18 pmIs there any way this can be done and keep the Apple logo instead of getting the pineapple?
-
22. ruffdeezy Says:
July 20th, 2008 at 3:20 pm@ Sonic
Yep, have to go into expert mode when creating custom firmware. -
23. SonicBlue82 Says:
July 20th, 2008 at 3:35 pmthanks ruffdeezy. I’m just attempting to jailbreak my iPhone 3G, so obviously when I connect my iPhone to my Mac, iTunes will not be downloading the new software, as the phone already has it. So in Pwnage, after i select iPhone 3G, it is asking me for the location of the IPSW …. how do I get past this?
-
24. reloaded Says:
July 20th, 2008 at 4:39 pmsomeone help. iphone just has the pineapple logo and wont go past that! cpu no longer recognizes my iphone.
-
25. bc Says:
July 20th, 2008 at 8:53 pm@Trafalgargirl
to get the standard logo on boot, just use Expert mode, go to the custom logo section and uncheck the pineapple logo. you can also load your own choice of custom logo, BTWI don’t have an iPhone 3G yet, but I used this on my iPod Touch which had already been updated to v2.0. Wow, so easy to jailbreak, compared to older methods I had tried
p.s. if you’re having trouble, the dev team today posted v2.0.1, it supposedly fixes some bugs. maybe that will help.

July 22nd, 2008 at 11:28 pmHi,
I succeeded upgrading my 1st gen iPhone (1.1.4 previously with ziphone) to 2.0 using Pwnagetool.
But I have problem with youtube and itune.
I can search youtube videos, however I can not play the video. It takes long time to download and nothing appears. I notice on youtube volume bar, the default setting is max (100%). I know that from firmware 1.1.4 the default setting is 50%.
Same with iTune, I can search the songs, but I can not play it.
Anyone can help me?
Safari and my Wifi connection are OK.Thanks so much.

July 23rd, 2008 at 12:05 amHi Hendra,
I would just restore your iPhone again with the custom firmware you made. -
36. Jojo Says:
July 23rd, 2008 at 8:00 amI just got it working last night, went from a ziphoned 1.3 to 2.0 with no problems. Everything seems to be working great except for the wireless connection. It connects to my network, but after navigating one page it never loads anything again (also e.g. on the weather app, if I go right after activating wifi it will work the first time, but not afterwards). Apparently this a bug on the 2.0 OS, and is common also on official upgrades, see http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7658059&tstart=0
Hopefully it will be sorted out soon.Question: If Apple releases a 1.2.1 update, how does that work with pwned phones, do we need to re-pwn with a future version of pwnage, or this same version, or will update just work straight (since a minor update probably won’t touch bootloader and stuff)?
Pwn on!
-
37. ruffdeezy Says:
July 23rd, 2008 at 9:21 amI’m not totally familiar with how pwnage works, seems to me that you would just use the same one and make new firmware since the process is totally different than ziphone. I’m sure the dev team will let us know too.

38. Michelle Says:
July 23rd, 2008 at 6:58 pmWill this for sure upgrade my 1.02 iphone to 2.0?
For some reason I have this fear of upgrading it, as I might lose my contacts etc..?
-
39. deviantdj Says:
July 23rd, 2008 at 10:54 pmIf you do the pwnage method you will be doing a restore and your contacts will be lost. If you use a mac just sync back to your mac first. Otherwise do a backup from iTunes and when the restore is done this will put things back to the way they were.
-
40. Jojo Says:
July 24th, 2008 at 8:02 am@Michele: if you have your contacts synchronized with an application on your computer, you can restore them through iTunes after the update. If not, well, yes you will lose them. You will lose all your settings (wifi, wallpaper, etc.), but anything that its synchronized from iTunes you can put back easily just by synchronizing again after the update.
-
41. Miche Says:
July 25th, 2008 at 11:30 pmThanks, I backed up my contacts, and am almost ready to pwn this phone.

That might, but I’ve never actually looked to see if the texts were still there. I think they might be but I can’t be sure. But, when jailbreaking your iPhone, after restoring, using the backup file is known to cause problems once in a while. -
