16 - 18 months

$85

19 - 21 months
N/A (use LHO)
$60

In English this means:

1. If you have been in your current agreement for 13 months you are eligible

2. If you have been in your current 3 year agreement less than 13 months and you didn’t get a phone at a subsidized price, you are eligible

3. If you have been in your current 3 year agreement less than 13 months and you did get a phone at a subsidized price when you sign your contract, you ARE NOT eligible.

I signed my contract in Dec 2007 and got the Moto KRZR for about $20. The CSR said I’m not eligible till Dec 2008. This really ticks me off. I am still debating whether or not to cancel my current agreement and sign and new contract or switch to Rogers. Either way I’m paying a $400 early cancellation fee. So this is going to cost me $700 and it gives me a new 3 year contract. But the actual retail price of the iPhone without a 3 year contract is about $700. So what is the point. Why should I basically pay full price with a 3 year contact. Another big mistake on the part of Fido and poor customer service to existing customers. They are more than happy to sign up new customers and go out of their way, once you’ve signed, they don’t care anymore.

Have you thought of transfering your plan and phone to someone? Family member or friend? I was told by Fido CSR that it’s free to give your plan/contract to someone else to take over. You can then start a new contract with them for the 3G iPhone. This was the option I would have gone for if my current plan wasn’t so good.

    Cheers,
    Ryoh

  2. 2. ruffdeezy Says:

You have to give up your # then and I don’t really want to do so. Plus I don’t think anyone will want to take it. That will work for some people though.

  3. 3. shirley Says:

yeah I’m very annoyed with this as well.
I’m not able to upgrade until Oct 2008 because I got some crappy Moto phone last year.
They said I would pay the $110 admin fee + cost of phone.

I also just went to the fido store and they confirmed that I can’t upgrade.
The worst part was that they had 16gb white iphone in stock!!

  4. 4. tony Says:

so let’s see my EPP plan signed on May, no phone offer was given obviously, do you think i am qualified? :( guess i have to call and find out

  5. 5. Harith Says:

All this palaver for a phone? Jeez…

  6. 6. shirley Says:

    correction : its a phone/camera/mp3 player/video player/internet surfingdevice/gps all in one.

  7. 7. WASSIM Says:

Listen to me, it is not worth it. The iPhone 3G feels cheap. It’s all Plastic. The only benefit, I repeat, the ONLY benefit, is the faster internet on the data plan. That is all.

Apple will be releasing another phone in a year and you’ll be stuck paying another 400$. Stick with your phone and enjoy your VVM which is only available to Fido.

DO NOT UPGRADE. I repeat, DO NOT UPGRADE. It is not worth it.

  8. 8. Chris Says:

    I called this morning.

Im currently on the Unlimited 70 (only about 14 months into a 3 year contact). i paid the 110 to allow me to get the phone for 249 then since my plan is over 30 a month i get the 50 dollar credit on a bill. plus i had 90 fido dollars i applied against the handset cost.

i added the $30.00 6Gb promotional data plan.
data will be active tonight so i can use my Unlocked iphone first gen until i receive my 3g iphone from fido next week.

im unsure if i will keep the 1st gen or the 3g.

i will compair the two and sell the one i dont like as much.

  9. 9. ruffdeezy Says:

I can’t find a white one anywhere now

  10. 10. meags Says:

I signed up with Rogers in October 2005 on a 3-year contract.

I upgraded my phone September 2007 & signed a two-year contract in place of my old one (which had just over a year left).

So does this mean I still can’t get the iphone until the end of September?

  11. 11. iphoney Says:

I have CityFido, and after I spoke with Fido this AM bright and early, I declined their offer to upgrade me to the iphone (actually her exact words were ‘privilege of upgrading” to an iphone) iif I agreed to add the system access fee to my account.

I asked her if she knew what the word CONTRACT meant, and if so, how suddenly it can be altered to Fido’s benefit, but I can’t alter it for my purposes.

While I made it clear to her that i’m aware she is only the messenger, I gave her a message to deliver to a supervisor:

    1) That, save for the SAF, I would have been more than willing to renew my recently renewed agreement plus, add a data plan thus increasing their revenue collected from me

2)I will be reviewing my ‘must have’ add ons, and be stripping down my service to the basics.

    3) once my plan runs out, i will be switching carriers, as that is the only way I would ever give up my plan, by leaving Fido altogether. At that time, Telus and Bell will be GSM (most likely) and the winners of the new spectrum space will be up and running.

She put me on hold and said that a supervisor will be calling me back by the end of the day.

If anything transpires ( or if someone even calls me back) I will post it here.

  12. 12. jonathan Says:

i’m 4 months into my 3 yr contract, so there are no alternatives, at all through fido?

    that is so lame.

  13. 13. Bryan Says:

    People! Why so serious?

Buy the phone by getting new contract and cancelling it after 15 days!!!

  14. 14. Pissed off, seriously Says:

WELL its the 24th and I called Fido today.

    The bottom line is this.

I can wait till October, which will be the min. 12 months into my agreement. and pay a $35 cancellation fee.

OR if I want the iphone RIGHT NOW because I’m not in the minimum 12 months, I’ll have to pay $280 fee!!!! on top of the phone.

This is ridiculous. I can’t believe they’d treat their loyal current customers this way.

I have City Fido, so I won’t give that up. I’m not being greedy about having the iphone, I just wish they had THOUGHT THIS OUT before hand, and let us all know…before telling all of Canada that July 11th was the day…advertising it all over, only to say no in the end. It’s not right.

  15. 15. mark Says:

can someone elaborate On what the benefits would be of cancelling and buying out the phone? Why after 15 days? That would mean I would pay about $700 for a 16gb, correct? I am currently on a three year contract with two years remaining as of yesterday. Can I start a second line, get an iphone and cancel? Additionally, A couple of fido’s people disagree on whether or not I am eligible to upgrade. One says I must wait one month because that puts me in the 13-15 month column, the other says today because I just began my 13th month. To get a 16gb I must pay the $299, plus $110 admin fee, and apparently another $50 because my plan is under $35 a month…so I would be looking at about $500, taxes included. I would also be starting another three year agreement as of today. Anyone know if I could create a second line, get the phone, then cancel that account specifically while keeping the phone (but paying for it), and also keeping my second line?

  16. 16. Jackie Says:

    Ahh..

For those of us who are on the CityFido plan are still being pushed around by Fido….

We’re not able to get the iPhone without the SAF. That’s the most important thing to me right now…

For us, the iPhone would cost an infinite amount of money. After 3 years of contract, we’ll still have to pay for the dumb SAF, as long as we’re still with them.

So tell me.. how is this fair for existing customers? This is BullSh*t!

  17. 17. buzzey Says:

Maybe you should check your sources and determine if this is real or not.

I am in 11 months of agreement and did not get a phone when I signed a 2 year agreement last August.

According to what you have posted I should be eligible as being less than 12 months and no phone.

According to CSR and the Fido Flagship store in Vancouver, I am not eligible until I reach 12 months.

However, in my experience different CSR’s say different things so I might have to call a few more times.

Is there anything official posted anywhere?

  18. 18. Laurence Says:

    Jackie,

I do agree that it’s dumb for CityFido user, they(we) will need to pay the SAF from now on to get the iphone.

However, keep in mind that they’re selling the iphone at discounted price ($199/$299) as opposed to the rumor “original price” of $599/$699. When I renewed my agreement back in Feb2008, I was asking if I can get a free/rebate on new phone and I was told that they’ll have to remove the SAF discount for that, and so I didn’t get any phone back then. In other words, the “removal of SAF discount to get “discounted phone” was already in place BEFORE the arrival of iphone 3g.

ON TOP OF THAT, iphone 3g is the ONLY phone you can use $Fido at its discounted price. For all of the other phone, $Fido can only be applied to the ORIGINAL (aka ridiculously high) price of those lame a** phones.

I just ordered mine today from CSR and will be expecting the 8gb no longer than Aug 5th (if 16gb white, it’ll be Aug22, 16gb black, it’lll be Aug29).

bottom line, my COST for getting the iphone
    $249+tax - $50 credit - $190 Fido Dollar (<–you can tell how LONG i’ve been with fido) = $38.88!!

    PLUS a brand new 3yr agreement + $6.95/m SAF

Yes, $6.95/m is infinite but there’s no guarantee that they will keep the SAF discount forever. They can easily remove this discount when the next agreement is due.

Anyways, Just to share my story.

  19. 19. ruffdeezy Says:

    @ buzzey
It should state under 12 months no subsidized phone means eligible.

  20. 20. blameboy Says:

Well I don’t know who told you that there will be something Fido can do for “early” upgrade customers on July 24th because there is no such thing. For years, Fido/Rogers has this 12 months upgrade policy.

Basically what happen is if you are dying for an iPhone with less than 12 months on your last phone upgrade, you have the option to port your telephone number to Rogers and sign up as a new activation.

You get the same price on iPhone as any other new customer, just that you keep your telephone number. Also, if you have a discount voice plan on your Fido account, Rogers will take a look in your Fido account and try to match it for you.

You still pay for the early cancellation fee of $20 per month (up to $400) on your Fido account.

  21. 21. Brad Says:

called Fido today, currently I’m on a 2 year contract and did not get a new phone when I renewed. Talked to a CSR and luckily, I have to wait only a month to be in the 12 month range and then I can get an iphone but I will be charged $35 fee to renew (versus $400 to cancel early). The iphone will cost me $249 (which I’ll use my Fido dollars toward) because I’m below a $30/month voice plan. So, next month, I’m going to activate the $30 6bg data addon before it expires, and then call to get the iphone.

  22. 22. Laurence Says:

    @ Brad

“I’m on a 2 year contract and did not get a new phone when I renewed. Talked to a CSR and luckily, I have to wait only a month to be in the 12 month range”

If you’re in your 2yr contract and still WITHIN the first 12 months of your contract (and did not get a free/rebate on new phone when you renewed), you CAN get the iphone NOW without paying any fees (not even $35).

    As stated above

“Active agreement less than 12 months.
No agreement rebate on phone in the last 12 months.(excluding City Fido Unlimited and $70 Unlimited Calls Anywhere in Canada).
    Eligible without administration fee.”

I think the CSR might be try to scam you. GET YOURS NOW!! (read my story above, my late renewal was Feb 2008, only 5 months into that contract)

    Cheers,

  23. 23. blameboy Says:

For those who are on very special voice plan like City Fido, there is one way to go around to get an iPhone and keep your current plan.

Also, by all mean if your friends or family members that have been with Fido/Rogers more than 12 months on their contracts, they can actually help you get an extra iPhone at new activation price.

How? I am not here to discuss on it. You just have to think hard and know all their policy. My friend who used to work at Fido told me about it. I think he is genius.

  24. 24. ruffdeezy Says:

If you are on city fido and were not eligible before. You will be if you meet the criteria above and give up your system access fee credit.

  25. 25. Brad Says:

    @ Laurence

OMG, I’m glad you told me that and I can’t believe I’m so naive to believe that CSR. I called again today and yup, I got my iphone ordered without any fee’s. Came out to $125 after I used my Fido$ for the 8gb.. WOW, I mean.. they really shouldn’t scam people like that!

  26. 26. blameboy Says:

    @ruffdeezy

The method that my friend taught me is different. You don’t give up system access fee credit and you are just paying new activation price ($199,$299) for your iPhone.

  27. 27. trickman Says:

blameboy is right. I am going to release the tricks. Use them at your own risk and I don’t hold responsible for anything.

    1. Use special plan without worry

There is a rule that isn’t written by the book from Fido/Rogers but it can be done if you talk to a customer service who know what he is doing. Contract can be transferable from one telephone number to another. What that means is if you have 2 numbers on your account, 1 has no contract and the other has 2 years contract left. You can transfer the 2 years contract from that number to another number for whatever reason. Now THINK HARD!

If you have a telephone number with CityFido from Fido or Retention Plan from Rogers without any contract, now you want an iPhone. What you do is sign up a new activation with 3 years contract, then get the best deal for your iPhone. Next, ask the customer service to transfer the 3 years contract to the phone number that has special plan. Now your new number has no contract and can be cancel at any time. Cancel the new number and paid for 1 month of service. You keep your iPhone and your special plan. NICE! This is one way to do it.

PS: Your old phone number contract must end already in order to do this or there will be no way the customer service will do it for you. Common sense.

  29. 29. ruffdeezy Says:

    @ trickman
I wish I knew that before but everytime I’ve asked CSR’s (even good ones from the forums) they’ve said it is not possible to port a number within Fido.

  30. 30. Laurence Says:

    @ trickman

“If you have a telephone number with CityFido from Fido or Retention Plan from Rogers without any contract, now you want an iPhone”

For CityFido (unlimited), the only way for fido user to keep using their unlimited CityFido is to sign an agreement. The CityFido (unlimited) can no longer be available without an agreement.

So I don’t think the “trick” above would work for CityFido (unlimited) users.

  31. 31. jewels Says:

I called in to Fido on July 22nd to inquire about how to become eligible for the iPhone. I recently transferred to Fido from Telus in March this year. Right off the bat, I told the CSR that I’ve been with Fido for a few months and asked him to explain how I could be eligible. He looked over his chart several times and put me on hold and then told me that my options were to pay the ECF or to call in on July 24th. I told him if I was gonna pay the ECF, there is NO WAY that I would stay with Fido. I mean seriously, wouldn’t one think that the ECF is a deterrence for someone to leave Fido or whatever company it may be? Even the CSR was baffled and couldn’t explain it to me! Anyways, I asked to speak to a supervisor and was told there weren’t any around 7pm!!!!! WTF??? They were working unsupervised? After taking all of my info, I was informed that he just checked with the supervisor for something! Again, I told him that I wanted to speak to the supervisor. Was put on hold for over ten minutes. We went through everything again and she assured me that “fido was working on a solution. a plan for everyone,” that they were trying to make their clients feel more confident blah blah blah bs! Anyways, I bought into it considering that I spoke to a supervisor and decided to call back on the 24th.

Total time spent on phone - 40 mins

I called back on the 24th…the experience was not much better. But I did receive an explanation as to why I would have to pay the ECF, to pay for the phone that I bought with my plan in March (phone not worth $400). But if I’ve been with fido with over a year, then I’d be eligible to upgrade. Someone please explain how that makes a difference! The client service was terrible! The guy was such a jerk! He says to me “you want an expensive phone so it’s going to cost you!” - Really what kind of customer service training are these reps getting????

This isn’t my first bad experience with Fido. Their CSRs are not knowledgeable, not friendly, not client service oriented. Their first solution to everything seems to be you have to pay the ECF. If I call in enough times, I may have received enough information to figure out a solution for myself - not in this case though.

So for me, I’ll hold off on iphone 3G. I’m hoping in 3years time that Bell & Telus will be on GSM. Maybe they will have the iPhone!

  32. 32. jewels Says:

btw, total time spent on second phone call 30 mins

  33. 33. shanks Says:

    here’s the situation.

i had a fido phone no contract. was using an unlocked lg prada phone. went out on the weekend, lost the phone and sim card.
went to fido to buy the iphone 3gS. they were sold out so they sent me upstairs to the apple store. told me i would have to start a new activation with a new number for a three year term then i could port my original number over the new number.
went downstairs to fido after purchase and the guy who said this would be possible called for me and was rejected. then i called and was told they could not port my old number over my new number.
    customer retention was no help.
what should i do? the phone has been with me for about 2 days…
what’s this 15 day return policy?
do i have to port to rogers with some crappy unlocked phone then cancel with fido then re activate a brand new account fido to get my iphone.

why would they put me through all of this when all i want is my old number. i’d even pay the activation fee again.

please help going in tomorrow deal with this mess.
