More info on Fido’s elusive July 24th date Why the iPod touch is still a viable product in Canada

This method will disable your iPhone 3G or your first gen iPhone at 2.0 firmware from using any cellular network data (3G or edge). Do this if you don’t have a data plan and only want to use wifi. This is also important for those who have upgraded to 2.0 on their first gen iPhones because upgrading automatically enables data.

Here’s how:

Step 1 - Go to unlockit.co.nz on your iPhone in safari

Step 2 - Hit next, disable data, install, and finally install now

Step 3 - A profile which disables data will be loaded into your iPhone, test it out, see if you can use data while not on wifi. It won’t work. If you check your usage stats, you won’t have used any data

If you want to get a data plan one day and remove this profile, go to settings, general, profile, then hit remove.

I have an unlocked 1st Gen iPhone running firmware 2.0 and it did not automatically “enable” data for me. My usage under Settings > General > Usage is 0 bytes for both Sent and Received. I have never been able to use the Mail/Safari/Weather Widget/etc. unless I am on wi-fi. Can someone point to a reference that shows that data is automatically enabled with firmware 2.0? Honestly, I don’t think this is true. The website, in the video, seems sketchy to me…

  3. 3. ruffdeezy Says:

most people who have updated to 2.0 have said it’s automatically enabled data. What’s wrong with the website ?

  4. 4. Boss Says:

Will this block still allow you to use your visual voicemail. I’ve heard that when you block your data it makes the visual voicemail unavailable as it uses data … ? So for anybody that has tried this … what is the status of your visual voicemail.
Ps. Is it safe to do … any problems yet?

  5. 5. blameboy Says:

Actually, the easiest way to block any data usage is to call Fido/Rogers and request for data block.

There are 2 advantages by doing this.
    1. It makes sure it is fully block.
    2. Even IF for any reason you are able to use data and get charge on your bill, you have a good reason for them to credit your bill.

I still think if you are willing to spend that kind of money for an iPhone, you shouldn’t go cheap without adding a data plan. I know there’s WiFi but come on, how many places in Canada support free WiFi.

    ps: Visual Voicemail needs data.

  6. 6. generalinqinq Says:

    @blameboy

    agree with you 100%

  7. 7. Interested in Iphone Says:

I was talking to the Rogers CSR, but they claimed they can’t shut off the data feature on the Iphone even though I’ve read about other people being able to do so.

  8. 8. Dani Says:

sick now people have a double guard, rogers/fido block so you cover your self, then this so that if somehow they open it you have another shield.

    Perfect

  9. 9. Dani Says:

interested not true, its a hit and miss situation but it is 100% doable, just keep calling until you get someone who can do it.

  10. 10. andre Says:

I called Rogers many times and talked to sevaral CSR’ and tech support guys..They are literally threating and scaring the customer saying that “data block” is not possible and if you dont buy a data plan they don’t guarantee that your iphone will not be “pushed” data without you knowing it.. and then you’ll be billed hundreds of dollars by per kb use price.. I bought an iphone on a thre year “voce only” plan and they put a block.. We’ll see what happens. I am ready to take them to cout if they charge me any data if I don’t use it since thay said they blocked dat aonmy account..I never thought I could hate any company more than Bell, but now I see that I can.. I have been with Rogers for several years for my entire home comm’n and cable TV and pay them $350-400 every month and they can’t offer a smaller data plan with less cost (such as 10 bucks for 100 MB, 20 bucks for 500 MB etc) as I am not a heavy internet user. I can’t wait till december when my home phone contract ends and I will cancel all my internet, home phone and HD Cable service. They are so arrogant and self destructive that they will lose my $250/month while tryin to rip me off for 10-20 bucks unnecessary data fee.

  12. 12. sameil Says:

What do you mean if you spend that kind of money for an iPhone, you shouldn’t go cheap without adding a data plan.

Think of it as an ipod touch and a phone in one device for only $199 rather than $280. Considering either way u need to sign up for 36 month contract, why not get the iphone?

  13. 13. sameil Says:

    One question:

On the website there is an option: “Allow data on any SIM”

I assume i rogers still charges data if u use that APN, right?

  14. 14. ruffdeezy Says:

I’m not sure what that option does or how it would work. The website is from New Zealand is that makes any kind of difference. Would be nice to get unlimited data for free though.

  15. 15. GR81 Says:

you can buy an iPhone outright in NZL (for a small mortgage) but you still cant use it on pre-pay/pay-as-you-go. you still need a contract of some sort.

  16. 16. blameboy Says:

You need to talk to the right people to block it.

  17. 17. Alex G Says:

    ya blameboy is right
the first csr i spoke to said you can’t block data at all
but the next csr said u can but it may not block all data since the iphone 3g is so much based on data usage like for example all the apps like weather and appstore ect use data and also features like visual voice mail use data so she said it may not be possible to block data for every app and mobile me

  18. 18. A.J Says:

Isn’t there an option to turn off 3G anyway. If you do this and enable WiFi then you should be okay right?
I’m going to get an iPhone in a month or so and i’m planning on getting it without a data plan.

P.S. If you want to turn off the data thing how are u supposed to access that website above? Through WiFi?

  19. 19. ruffdeezy Says:

    @ AJ
Yes you can turn 3G off but then the phone will still receive Edge data.

  20. 20. Fran Says:

hey guys thanks for the the guides and info
    much appreciated

Unlocked iphone 3g but im getting Rogers as my
    carrier, and im with fido
anyone else getting this/ know how to fix it ?

  21. 21. mel121212 Says:

you cannot really block data. they did it for my friend and it still perfectly works even where there is no wifi. well see wat happens when she gets her bill. plus the iphone needs 2 update automatically every once and a while and that uses data so even if ur data is “blocked” its still gonna charge you for the data used during the update. trust me i really wanted an iphone. i did my research and spoke to many different sales associates in store and on the phone. if u ask me they are not well informed on their products AT ALL. cant wait till the first wave of bills come in and they get screwed cuz they supposedly promised the clients their data was “blocked”

  22. 22. ruffdeezy Says:

    @ Fran
How do you have an unlocked iPhone 3G?? eBay?

  23. 23. me Says:

They can TOTALLY block the 3G and the EDGE so you end up not downloading any data..they just either dont know it/ dont want to tell you
after 3-6 calls to the fido consumer service you should be good

Sometimes they will tell you they have blocked but they always seem to put the wrong block(since you also need a EDGE block) keep calling till when you go on the internet it tells you you cant like in the video

You will still be able to access Wi-FI FOR FREEE (even though they might not tell you that)

Enjoy the argumentation with them..its always a lot of fun.

  24. 24. Norty Says:

I called Rogers tech support and told them to block the Edge Data, she did it within couple minutes with no problem at all, once the Edge Data was disabled you won’t see the E symbol on the top left corner when there’s no WIFI connection.

  25. 25. Brock Says:

ok so im almost eligible for an upgrade on rogers but i dont think i want wireless data (call me crazy but i spend 99.9% of my time in a wifi zone), can i get an iphone, cancel the data plan pay the 50 bucks and then get it data blocked so i can use only wifi?? will i still be able to use gps?
    thanks, rogers is amazingly unhelpful.

  26. 26. Mark Says:

I am in the same boat as Brock…

    Edge / 3G block

    but -

    Still use Visual Voicemail?
    Still use GPS?

  27. 27. costco255 Says:

In the morining, just talk to the Fido’s sale rep, they said that they have new software to block their fido’s data internet and just work for wifi, but later in the evening call them back to confirm the other sale rep said it’s not work will go back to 3G net work if wifi not connect.

  28. 28. hariss Says:

As others, I have fake APN settins in my iPhone 3G (That was the first thing I did when i got the phone the 14/07). I have access to wifi most of the times. Don’t need mobile data.

Just type any thing, gibberish, in
    Settings>General>Network>Cellular Data Network>APN
You do not need any software to do that for you. Even with any fake APN settings, you should be able to user GPS, which is assisted but you will not have the maps because you need Internet access to download the maps.

  29. 29. hk Says:

    Hey everyone,

I live in Canada and I was curious about the iphone without the data plan so I asked the Fido rep and she said it is okay. Because I will be on wifi zone all day, I will have wi-fi access all day long. I don’t really need a data plan for that reason.

So I have a few questions I hope you guys can help me with

    1. What functionality would only work with wifi not 3g network?

    2. Is it possible to completely shut off 3g by the method above? I am concerned about this the most because if I don’t get a data plan, but the IPhone still transmits to 3g, I will get charged A LOT (like $50 per MB) so I really hope there is a way to completely verify that it doesn’t happen.

    3. Has anyone tried this before? I read on some other forums that some people have tried it, but are there any …. quirky things that I should watch out for if I do get dataless iphone?

4.Is there anyone has recieved the first invoice of iphone 3g from fido yet?

    Thanks!

  30. 30. ruffdeezy Says:

    Hi

    1. Everything will work the same, the only difference is that the iPhone iTunes store only works on wifi.

    2. Yes, all cellular data is completely shut off by this method.

    3. I did it as did many others. Nothing will be wrong, it just wont let you go on the internet when not on wifi.

    4. I think a couple people have but I haven’t seen any posted yet.

This method works, don’t worry, you wont be charged.

  31. 31. hk Says:

    Thanks Ruffdeezy.

Thanks very much for your info.

  32. 32. someguy Says:

i installed fake apn but when i turned off wifi, it switched to endge
    what should i do?

  33. 33. spiiz Says:

When I first got the iPhone (by phone), I told them to disable all data and asked the representative to recheck 3 times to make sure…
However, I could still connect to 3G and if I disabled it thru the phone settings, it would connect to the EDGE network (3G or E logo appearing next to ROGERS)

I had to call them again and ask for a 3G and EDGE block. The rep was very nice and knew her stuff, she blocked EDGE and 3G and told me to try Weather/Maps/YouTube/Mail/Safari to make sure it doesn’t work!

So basically.. just call them and ask for 3g and edge network block

  34. 34. Jonathan Says:

Just a note from one not so intelligent user, being me, while I thought that Fido was blocking my data…it turns out they can block either 3G or Edge or 3G and Edge. On my plan they had blocked Edge only. Just to be safe I installed Fake APN. Yes paranoid. Then I ran into some errors with my iPhone, restored it. Loaded some Apps. The first thing that happened after restoring it was an App checked for an update using 3G.

While I thought data was blocked, it was only blocked for Edge. And while I thought Fake APN was on my phone, it had been erased during the restore…a moment of brain fade.

Learn from this mistake. A) Check and double check with Fido or Rogers. B) When you restore or update, the first thing you should do is connect with Wifi to the Fake APN page and install it. My bad that will cost me…probably not too much but still needless.

BTW I called to get the 3G and Edge block but nothing seems to have changed on my phone. I am still getting the 3G and E icons. Plus a kicker, the Fido guy said they would be disabling my WiFi. I think he was confused about this, I think he meant that I would be able to access their WiFi hotspots. But I will live dangerously and see for myself.

  35. 35. AJ Says:

I have an iPhone 3G and i’m planning on using it without a data plan. I juts installed this on it and when i try and connect to the internet using 3G or Edge i get an error which is a good thing. Then i try WiFi and it works. So i think i’m good to go.

  36. 36. 2g Says:

thank u very much for this info!!:D

  37. 37. ruffdeezy Says:

    No problem =)

  38. 38. j varela Says:

Alarm bells went off when my fido account was going over it’s credit limit (2 weeks after I paid my monthly bill). It seems that the trusty wi-fi connection at my house wasn’t as strong as the provider’s (!). Called them and asked not to have any data transfers allowed on my iphone. Lasted 2 days and the Edge sign was back on. Since have called them a few more times and it’s been a back and forth thing (the block gets unblocked). Installed the fake APN and it works so far.
I’ll keep bothering Fido to make sure I’m not being charged for something I don’t want or need.
It’s quite absurd that all of my charges happened from my house where I have a very strong and reliable wi-fi network.

  39. 39. steve Says:

i downloaded this but it didnt work on my iphone. cause everytime i went online it said it couldnt connect cause i didnt have a data network plan or something, but i went to my usage information and the kb sent and received went up

  40. 40. Mike Says:

    ^^^^^

I had the same experience. I’m with Fido and I wanted to block data myself because I wanted to be able to turn on data to retrieve Visual Voicemail. I also couldn’t connect with Safari but when I loaded some apps that used the net, there wasn’t any error saying it couldn’t connect. The app just kept trying to connect without updating. When I checked my data usage, I had incurred about 1.5 MB of sent/received data! that’s aoubt $75!!! That scared ths hit out of me.

Can anyone explain what is happening??? Does this fake APN actually work?

  41. 41. Mike Says:

Just to add to the above. I didn’t go to the site with my iPhone. Instead I downloaded the config file and emailed it to my iPhone because I wanted to keep a copy on the phone. I think it shouldn’t make a difference.

  42. 42. chris Says:

I tried it & it seems to be blocking all data

  43. 43. Angela Says:

If you are with Fido, call them now to block the data for both Edge and 3G, it’s the safest way, and ask them for a confirmation number coz if anything gets charge you can always refer back to the conversation. My last call agent told me they would credit me if i ever get charged.

Coz we have 2 iphones, me and my bro, same model, got within a month of each other, both of us on FIDO, but my sim card shows Fido on the screen and no E or 3G when i’m out of my WiFi network. My bro’s one shows ROGERS (which is really weird considering we both have Fido bills, not Rogers) and has the E icon even though we have called to block (no 3G coz we turned that off that on the phone as well, but if we turn it on it, it would show up) but we can’t connect to Safari or Google on it, so it is successfully blocked on Fido’s end even if the icon is there. And the agent reassured me that it’s both block and they would credit me if data was ever charged. Previous agents has told me it’s not doable… coz they had some people complain that it’s still working even when they put a block on those accounts, and they (Fido) is looking to resolved that problem. Well i guess it has been resolved now coz it seem to be blocking both data networks on both our phones.

So it’s really if you get a nice agent who know what he or she is doing… if you dun get one that understand your problem, then call until you get one who knows and will get you the reassurance that you will be credited for any data charged if they did not block it properly.

  44. 44. ruffdeezy Says:

    @ Angela
It is best if Rogers does it, but this way is another back up which works too.

  45. 45. Rob Says:

yeah i just tried this, but the data usage on my phone goes up everytime i launch something that uses data. Even though it says when i launch the program “Not subscribed to a cellular data plan”.

Does this mean there is still data going through to the rogers network?!?

  46. 46. ruffdeezy Says:

    @ Rob
It’s because you still have push turned on. It is trying to find data but since it cannot connect you won’t be charged for it. Just turn push off.

  47. 47. gnij Says:

Once disabled I assume that its fully reversible if I decide to purchase the data, since new plans are coming out for data.

  48. 48. Johnnywild Says:

If you are on Rogers, there’s no need to mess around with this website. Before I bought my iPhone 3G yesterday, I called them to confirm that I could get data turned off and the CSR said yes. So when I bought my phone, I just called them before I even turned my phone on and it was no problem for them to disable data. The csr assured me that any charges from data would be reversed on my bill.

On a related note…when I was shopping for my iPhone, all Rogers stores gave me a really hard time with not wanting to get a data package. Obviously that’s how they make their money. I was even told that I could not purchase an iPhone through them without getting a data plan because I could not turn data off on the iPhone. If you’re looking for an iPhone, avoid the kids running the Rogers stores and go straight to a third party store like Wireless Wave ;)

  49. 49. ruffdeezy Says:

    @ Johnnywild
It is a good idea to ask Rogers to do it but it is a good idea to do both. It is not like this website is going to harm your iPhone.

  50. 50. Mike Says:

    @Rob & ruffdeezy,

I experienced the same problem as rob. When data apps were launched (e.g. One-Tap movies) The data counter went up. I had pushed turned off. It scared the shit out of me because I had incurred 1.5 MB of usage! That’s $75! But the thing was, the app didn’t refresh the movie schedules although I still didn’t receive any errors. Safari did not work and gave me an error.

Regardless, I called Fido and got them to block my data. I hope no data was actually used.

  51. 51. Wallace O Rasheed Says:

hey i was wondering how am i supossed to go on this site if I am going to be charged when doing so . like seriously man, even tought im on wifi i am still going to be connected to 3g and edge so i might be charged.

  52. 52. ruffdeezy Says:

You can’t be connected to wifi and 3G at the same time.

  53. 53. Wallace O Rasheed Says:

HEY GUYS I JUST CALLED ROGERS AND THEY SAID THEY WILL AND CAN CANCEL THE 3G/EDGE.
BTW THEY SAID WIFI WONT WORK IS THIS TRUE?

  54. 54. Wallace O Rasheed Says:

and sorry for this other question ruffdeezy broo you personally took what plan for your iphone just wondering whats best for me as you have propably the biggest knowledge on this site right now.

  55. 55. ruffdeezy Says:

    @ Wallace
Wifi will always work, Rogers has no control over that, half of their employees need more training.

  56. 56. ruffdeezy Says:

    @ Wallace
I have the Fido epp plan, called the killer plan right now, it’s 17.50 for 200 mins and unlimited evenings and weekends. Plus I have the $30 for 6gb of data and the $15 iPhone value pack. It works out to like 75 bucks a month after tax and fees. You should be able to get the Rogers epp plan if you ask.

  57. 57. DownNSouth Says:

hey i was wondering what would be better for me.
the student plan or the epp plan?.
and what do I get off the epp plan?
like minutes text and all please precise it please man. ill be going on rogers

  58. 58. SK13 Says:

    @ruffdeezy:

You’ve been a great help to people on here so I was hoping I could bother you with a question too.

What does “pushed off” mean ? You told Rob to make sure you have “push off” after doing the steps to disable 3G/Edge. I still don’t have an iphone partly because I don’t want a data plan and was shut down by customer service at Fido yesterday when I called thema and they told me they could only block data 95% of the way and I would be charged for the any additional data that l”leaks” through with the iphone. Obviously after reading this thread it seems like that guy was BSing me and they can block data from their end.

Like you said I would also like to block it using unlockit.co.nz to be certain. If i do these steps will there ever be a time when I will have to redo these steps? Say if I jailbreak the phone, restore it or have to restart it for something? Will my APN settings change?

Also has anyone done this and then looked at their invoice at the end of the month. Did you notice any additional charges? I’m talking to people who DO NOT have a data plan…

  59. 59. SK13 Says:

Also what happens if you travel overseas…I’ve heard some nightmare stories about people with roaming data charges. Will this fix enable me to block all data, even when I go overseas?

  60. 60. ruffdeezy Says:

    @ SK13
To turn off push, go to settings, fetch new data, select push off. Fetch data can also be set to manual. Roaming data is defaulted to off and won’t go on unless you specifcally turn it on under settings, network. Anytime you restore the phone you will have to do this process again. If you do this and they block data on their end, there is absolutely no way any data will be used. I haven’t heard anyone say they have or have not been charged after doing this but it still isn’t possible that you would be charged because the phone won’t accept data after this process and the network is not supposed to send data to your phone.

  61. 61. SK13 Says:

    Thanks ruffdeezy,

So this seems like a foolproof method but upon doing a bit more research I found that another method is to also jailbreak the phone and use an application called bosspref which allows you to toggle data off/on.

Have you heard of this? Is it a better option? Sorry if this seems a bit off topic but is it even safe to jailbreak the phone for getting better applications and customizability? In other words I mean is there any way to return to the original factory firmware in case you get “sick” of the jailbreak mode?

  62. 62. Spaz Says:

I was talking to an aggressive and overzealous CSR at Rogers. He said that the two Edge and 3G blocks are NOT 100% effective and wanted me to sign up for the $30/6GB plan (are they on commission). He says voice mail bypasses any blocks. I dunno. On my older phone, I had edge blocked and I never incurred any charges.

The d**k CSR made a note on my account that I have been warned of any data usage charges and I would be fully liable for any data charges that occurred on my iphone.

  63. 63. GVRD Says:

Call Rogers iPhone tech support and ask to have Block APN-175 on your phone. I was told it blocks ALL data.

  64. 64. SC Says:

Hey guys, i was wondering what exactly is Edge?

  65. 65. ruffdeezy Says:

    @ SC
Edge is the name of one of the ‘networks’ that the iPhone uses for data, the other being 3G.

  66. 66. Davey Says:

Hey, I just got my iphone and got sucked into the $30 data plan so that I would not incur any charges. I want to know if this method of disabling the data is still effective with the new firmware? Thanks.

  67. 67. ruffdeezy Says:

    @ davey
Yes it works. They sucked you in for their commission, not out of concern for you.

  68. 68. Davey Says:

I figured something was up, i’ll be going back tomorrow and getting ride of the data plan. Thanks for the response.

I just got a new g3 I phone today. I didn’t get a data plan but I did order a visual voicemail plan and I am wondering if this profile blocks visual voicemail from my ipod. Also how do I change back if I don’t want this profile any more? I am into doing this if if I can change it back even if it ruins my visual voicemail, as I’d rather use regular voicemail than get a $1000 bill.

I just bought the iphone and found it using data. 12 kbs in an hour without even going on safari. I called up rogers and asked the lady to turn off edge. She didnt know what edge was but turned off 3 settings she said she had. Internet, Media, and Internet & Media. No fuss. Now only wifi works. No more data. Safari, appstore, weather, maps, all will not load unless I have wifi on.

  71. 71. Charlie Says:

Hey, I have the 1g iphone running on 2.0.1 firmware unlocked and jailbroken with the rogers network. Just started using it last night and this morning noticed that I had the green E in the top right corner of the iphone. I did not know what it was at first but shortlty figured it out when I was getting weather updates with no wifi connection available. I called Rogers and spoke to a CSR and he said that he disabled the edge network. I will go home and try to install the fake APN and make sure that it’s not working. Im also going to call rogers tomorrow to get them to double check if it is disabled. I found i already used 110kbs of data in an hour just from weather and email updates… If anyone has any comments or any advice please let me know. I will post tomorrow and will see what happened i guess with the bill. Ill try to get Rogers to take it off since I didn’t sign up for a data plan.

  72. 72. ruffdeezy Says:

    @ Charlie
When did you update it to 2.0.1?
It’s good that you only used 100kb’s because that’s only $5.50 and not like $2000 like some people got. Turn the push notification off if you aren’t using it and do the fake apn and you will be fine.

  73. 73. Sid Says:

Just got the iphone today and have installed the software as instructed. It works!! It stopped sending and receiving data. Thank you so much for sharing this! Will still call Fido tomorrow to make sure both the Edge and 3G are off!!

  74. 74. Charlie Says:

Thanks guy’s, I updated to 2.0.1 on Friday night when I unlocked and jailbroke the firmware with pwnage tool so I could use it on rogers. Just installed the fake APN and also it looks like the E symbol has disapeared from my phone which is awesome. Ya i have the push featured turned off on my phone already. But I would recommend calling your service provider and bitching at them until they block it because that seems to be the safest way to go. Tonight I am going to load my phone with 2.1 firmware and see if everything sticks when I re-load it.

  75. 75. ruffdeezy Says:

Doing both blocks seem to be the best option

  76. 76. Lee Says:

Just got the iphone today from Fido. Called twice to block the 3G and Edge. Then when I got home, I tried to download the Fake APN onto the iphone, after I installed it, the data still kept receiving and sending even though I cant access the internet anymore (even with WiiFi). Very very weird! So I removed the application and reset the internet setting. Second time around, I did the same steps and this time, it works!! Thank God! I have already had like 552kb and 52kb on the phone, I was so scared that I’ll have to pay a lot of money at the end. But anyway, I think everything is in place now……hopefully. How much do they charge for 552kb received and 52 sent? Does anyone know?
Thank you again for putting this blocking application up! A Big Thank You to you!!

  77. 77. Raj Says:

Ok, so i called fido for the 5th time. They finally blocked my WAP and EDGE capabilities. I have a 2.1 iPHONE 3g and I still cannot connect via my WiFi network because safari keeps saying “safari cannot connect because there is no internet connection” Anyone got any ideas?

  78. 78. ruffdeezy Says:

    @ Raj
The cell data and wifi data is totally separate and fido cannot do anything to alter that. Im not sure what the problem is but it could be something with your wifi.

  79. 79. Lee Says:

@Raj, try resetting the internet setting. That’s what happened to me at the beginning, cant connect to wifi. I reset the internet setting and everything is working now. Remember to download the fake APN though, just to double make sure that you wont be surprised when you get the bill.

  80. 80. chris Says:

Under settigns, Wifi will it connect to your network??

  81. 81. MP Says:

Guys, just to confirm that this trick will still work once you upgrade your iphone 3G software from 2.0 to 2.1. Correct?

  82. 82. ruffdeezy Says:

Yes it still works, just did it, and reversed it with no problems at all on 2.1.

  83. 83. Dj Chico Says:

hey guys, im in Mississauga, Canada, i just got an iphone 3G without a data plan, i upgrated it to 2.1 firmware, i didnt unlock it or jailbreak it (yet). im 99% of the time on a wifi zone, at university and home, so i tried this website, followed the instructions, and works fine! the E sign that shows up on the top left will still be there, but if you try any application, it will just say that theres no connection, if your not on a wifi zone, i tried it. the only thing i dont like is that you cant toggle it on and off (from what i see so far), so that if i REALLY need internet without wifi, then i think i need to remove that file that was installed. But yea, im just confirming that this works!
i just wanna know, i hear of this BossPrefs application that you can get through Cydia….anyone can confirm that you can toggle on and off the edge setting, and that it works on the iphone 3G firmware 2.1??? if so, i think ill just get that, would be a lot easier if i ever need internet when no wifi

  84. 84. ruffdeezy Says:

Yes bossprefs will turn edge and 3g on and off

  85. 85. joan muller Says:

Goto http://iphonenodata.com/site and follow the 5 steps.

    Basically:

    1. Launch Safari on your iPhone
    2. Go to iphonenodata.com
    3. Tap the “Disable EDGE/3G” button
    4. Tap “Install”
    5. Tap “Install Now” to confirm

  86. 86. Peter Says:

Thanks guys…just call Fido and asked CSR to block 3G and Edge. CSR told me that it will takes 1~2 hr but after that I still get 3G sign and E sign on my iphone. Is it right? Will those 3g sign and E sign still on even Fido blocks data?

  87. 87. chris Says:

Mine does not show the E or the 3G as I called Rogers & did the fake APN block

  88. 88. e dude Says:

I just got my iPhone 3G and I called Fido to block both 3G/Edge as well but the ‘E’ symbol is still there so I called Fido back and they said not to worry about that symbol so we’ll see what happens. As of now I have not had any data coming in or out when I check the data usage on my phone so I am pretty sure it is good but I would call again to just confirm, just in case.

The customer service representative has also informed me that Fido has recently placed a cap for the customers without a data plan so that no data bill will exceed $100 CDN, however, I don’t know how if i believe that.

  90. 90. Kayy Says:

I finally recieved my iphone today! I called Fido to block 3G and Edge, the lady put me on hold saying they now need Supervisor’s permission to do blocks because they don’t recommend blocking data. After a few minutes she came back and said she could do so but kept overly stressing the fact that they do NOT recommend this, that it totally defeats the purpose of what an iphone is for and then repeats this again and again. Goodness! I told her I understood and I just want regular voice plan phone usage. So it was done she told me that it is blocked, but if for any reason any data usage might occur or slip through by 3G or Edge, I’m fully responsible to pay for it.
?? If I requested 3G and Edge blocked through Fido am I still able to access it on my own!?!
Anyway I just picked up my phone a few minutes ago and seen the Edge icon on the top–and once I unlocked the phone to get to the main menu it went away and switched to my wifi home connection. Being paranoid I followed the above instructions, disabled the wifi and tried going on safari/weather/google/stocks and none of it is working!! Must mean it’s working…so thanks so much for this!!
However, I was wondering if anybody else w/ no data plan and w/ blocked 3G & Edge still get the E edge icon at the top? It remains there with my wifi disconnected. Does it affect anything at all?

  91. 91. ruffdeezy Says:

    @ Kayy
Congrats on your iPhone. They don’t recommend it because they don’t get as much commission if you don’t have a data plan. The E will still be there but you won’t be able to connect. Keep this disable method installed just in case Fido screwed up blocking your data.

  92. 92. James Says:

I tried this and tried connecting, and it said there was no cellular network allowed or something like that. When I checked my cellular network data, Sent went from 5 kb to 44 kb! And recieved went from 20kb all the way to 314 kb! I even supposedly got the block through Rogersm but I guess it didnt work! Now I am going to have to phone them again, and have an expensive bill this month!

  93. 93. phil Says:

hey i did this but it loads the page i have last visited and my data usage goes up…..but when i refresh it says i didnt subscribe to a data network…but my usage goes up…will i get charged for this?

    Help please :]

  94. 94. AL Says:

I just called Rogers and I was going to order an iPhone. The girl told me it was fine that I didn’t want a data plan, and I could keep my current voice-only plan. She said she could block all data from her end, EXCEPT Apple has some “secret back door” update data that they send to your phone like EVERY 15 mins or half hour that neither Rogers nor I have ANY WAY of stopping, so at the end of EVERY month I can expect a couple/few hundred dollars worth of data charges on my account. Funny thing is, when I told her I would have to look into this and call back, she seemed so surprised, like “why wouldn’t he just be fine with this?” lol. So yeah is this “secret backdoor data” really being sent to your phone, and does the fake APN profile completely stop that too? Her scare tactics began to take a toll on my former confidence lol Thanks in advance for any help/info :D

  95. 95. Dan Says:

Hi everyone, I’ve just bought an iPhone with fido 2 days ago, and I got tricked in the data, but I’m thinking of cancelling it because I don’t see myself using it. I’ve tried that trick listed in this article I always saw data trickling in the iPhone’s data usage report even after I installed the mobileconfig files, even despite the phone telling me that I wasn’t capable of accepting. It was a trivial data amount (a couple of kilobytes both-ways per application launched), but data nonetheless.

I then resetted my statistics to see if I was imagining things, and the counters stayed at 0 bytes for sent and receive ever after. I removed the APN profile, repeated it, and i got the same behaviour. I had data trickling through until I resetted the usage statistics. Somehow something must be triggered in the iphone when resetting the statistics.

So all in all, this seems to work, but you HAVE TO make sure to reset these usage counters before it kicks into full force.

  96. 96. MT Says:

Hey there…I just called a Fido CSR and they told me that although they strongly recommend not to block data, it can be done. He also gave me some BS about how they would put a note attached to my account stating that they “warned” me not to block data (because they can’t guarantee it will block everything). He went on to tell me that if any data did get through, that I would have to pay it because they “warned” me that this could happen. So we will see what happens.

  97. 97. IPL Says:

I tried calling Roger’s hardware upgrade line and I was told I was eligible for a free upgrade. When I told the CSR I wanted to upgrade to an iPhone, he said it would cost 599/699 for the 8/16 GB with no data plan! (199/299 with a data plan) WTF is going on here?? how did everyone get their voice-only plans/upgrade with the same plans from their old phone?

  98. 98. Bruno Says:

This method seems to work for me . I tried accessing my mail and Safari on the 3G .. and they did not work on the 3G.
My usage still at 0 .
    Thanks for this .

My first bill on te 3G was over $300 .
I almost threw my Iphone away ..was i MAD.
    hahaha

  99. 99. kris Says:

I can’t find APN on my iphone … is it the same as VPN ??

  100. 100. turbo Says:

    to ipl
that foo doesnt know what hes talking about or hes lying to u.. just go somewhere else.. its an extra 50 bucks on top of 199/299 if youre getting it without data plan..

i have disabled 3g and edge on 4 iphones 3gs (before the fake apn was available) .. and yes u will have to call several times and wait “in priority sequence” for a while to get to a csr that will know how to do this.. i have been going without any bullshit “data leakage” since july on all 4 phones.. theyre probably just scaring u

another note to noobs.. WIFI HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH ROGERS/FIDO WIRELESS.. YOU WILL NOT BE CHARGED DATA ON THE NETWORK.. TURNING OFF 3G/EDGE WILL STILL ALLOW YOU TO CONNECT ON WIFI

  101. 101. shilpinator Says:

@turbo: so if i go to rogers or fido, and ask to buy a iphone 3g on a 3 year term with a $25 plan.. it would cost 199 + 50 ?

  102. 102. Lee Says:

@James @Phil: I had the same problem when I first got my iphone. I installed the fake APN, safari cannot display the website, but then the data usage still went up (and I actually called the CSR to have to 3G and Edge blocked before I activate my phone) Anyway, I reset the internet setting on the iphone (through setting), then installed the Fake APN again, then everything is working now. When I called the CSR earlier, I did ask for a confirmation number when they blocked my 3G and Edge. So, later on, when I get charged for those data transmission, I was able to get a refund on them because it wasnt my fault. Hope this helps!!

  103. 103. Lee Says:

@Shilpinator: Sorry, I know you didnt ask me. But that was the case when I got my iphone from Fido. I picked a plan that is $17.5, and even with the voicemail and caller display added, it’s still not over $35. So I have to pay an extra $50 for the iphone. Hope this helps!! Try to make use of the Fido’s referral program, because that will save you $20. You can find the info on fido’s website.

  104. 104. Leah Says:

Does this work with version 2.2??

  105. 105. jenny Says:

what exactly is push(fetch new data)?!

  106. 106. cezzar Says:

hi, does this also work for the first generation iphone in 2.2 version? i tried installing this but i am still incurring cellular network data…

  107. 107. man Says:

I was just about to buy an iPhone 3G today from Fido. Just before signing the contract at the kiosk I noticed that there were two dangerous paragraphs:

    1. The data access when using an iPhone is turned on by default
    2. If you you are to cancel that option before the end of the contract you are subject to fee(s).

I decided to call CSR to see what exactly they meant by this. As soon as the respresentative heard that I bought an iPhone and wanted to had a block on the data access he said literally that they would put a block. It was not a problem BUT they cannot guarantee that the block would always work. I told him I didn’t understand how it is possible to have a block and to be screwed after by them and he stated that if I don’t want to have any surprises just not to get the iPhone.
Eventually I was more than happy because I hadn’t signed the contract. And I will not at all. So, if you, guys and girls, do not want to get screwed by Fido/Rogers go over you agreements in very details and ask as many questions as it is necessary in order to save your neck. Otherwise Fido/Rogers will laugh at you seeing you f***d into their f***g Web.Just be carefull.
Good luck to all of you.

I have a 2G iphone that my wife uses and I noticed two txt messages on the screen. It said I was charge $25 for Data, and the second message said I was billed for $50 for data network. I called Fido and I said what are the messages about. They said you have a $550 invoice because you are using the data. WTF!!! Long story short - I have been using the iphone 2g using an older firmware 1.1.2 or something like that. I later upgraded to the 2.2 (latest ver) not too long - about 3 weeks ago. I guess with the new version of iphone OS, DATA Access IS ALWAYS ON and you are not warned but I guess my wife never saw the EDGE being displayed. Anyways - I talked to FIDO CSR and the gave me an option and that is pay $25 for the two month (500mb data) and they will credit my account for the charges and at the end of the next billing cycle, cancel my Data plan and have DATA BLOCKED on my phone. I’m going to install the block as mention in this thread above and double check with FIDO that Data is blocked. I never thought I would say this but THANK YOU FIDO CSR. - Lessons learned. Don’t give your wife your credit card or your iphone :)

I’m glad that some has figured out a way for this, but I have a follow up question. I haven’t tested the theory on whether you can get Rogers/Fido to block your data, but I don’t see a reason why it shouldn’t. In regards to, Weather, Maps and all the other small applications? Does anyone know if they work over EDGE ONLY? I am a student and spend most of my time on campus which includes free WiFi, hence why I don’t want to get a Data Package. By disabling data, does that mean nothing will work, unless I am in a WiFi area? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I just called Fido to request for the data block on my iPhone 3G.
In 30 seconds he said ok it is blocked now (could take upto 2 hours).
To reconfirm I asked about both Edge and 3G and he said it is one program that blocks everything. He did ask me if it is fido iphone and I said yes. He said then you are good to go, don’t worry it is blocked.

Updated my iPhone 3G (no jailbreak) to 3.0 and installed iphonenodata.com profile. I am using AT&T prepaid. All data traffic on wifi (when available). Though it shows 3G in top left corner, on accessing any website in safari or in mail app it says - “Could not activate cellular data network: You are not subscribed to a cellular data service”.

On wifi everything is working fine - safari, mail, youtube etc.
Cellular data network in Settings > General > Usage show 0, 0 for bytes send & received.

Everything is working perfectly fine! :-)
    Thanks for iphonenodata.com

    Hello,

I just got an iphone with a $39.99 monthly plan (with the data plan $30/month which of course I do not want).

I have been able to do the APN fake thing and now accessing internet via the
wi-fi available at my place. I guess the big question in my mind is what will be
my AT&T bill now? For example, I have 450 minutes and even I do not use a single minute, I still would have to pay $39.99. So that makes me ponder that even if we bar the AT&T internet through Edge or 3G, will they still charge me for (39.99 + 30) or just for the phone bill $39.99? Please help me and I do
    appreciate any thoughts on this.

Since, I just brought the phone, I’ll be in a position to return it with no big
hassles if I don’t have a reduced bill. any word of advice to get around it will
    be helpful. thanks!

bottom line they want to buy a new phone with 3 year contract again !!!!

I prefer to pay 420$ and cancel my service (120$ a month)

ROGERS is definetely one of the worst companies in Canada

    DO NOT GO WITH ROGERS

  120. 120. Ryan Says:

Robin - AT&T will not lower your billif you do not use the data plan. This is how AT&T gets their customers. What you would have to do is return the iphone, buy a regular mobile phone with a regular plan. Then, buy an iPhone off the street/Craigslist and then run the patch on your phone which inputs the fake APN. Insert your SIM from the new phone and you should not be billed since you are no longer using data on the iphone. Hope this helps!
