Canada isn’t the only country with poor iPhone Plans Happy Canada Day!

It looks as if Rogers has made some modifications to the details about using an iPhone in Canada. Unfortunately they have not made any changes to the plans.  They are now saying that you can choose a plan without any data included.  This is great news for City Fido customers who didn’t want to lose their golden plan. They have also confirmed that the System Access fee applies to iPhone plans (as if it wasn’t going to anyway).

Rogers has also stated that you can’t modify the software. As in unlocking it. The good thing about this though is that it is not a Rogers branded firmware phone so they can’t tell if you have unlocked it or not because your IMEI is still the same. They do say that the warranty will be voided. Hopefully Ziphone or iLiberty comes out with an unlocking tool that masks the fact it has been unlocked if you restore the phone. I haven’t decided if I will unlock it yet when that is available. My plan was to just keep my 1st gen iPhone for travelling.

Unfortunately these clarifications don’t do much to change the extraordinary prices but it does add a few options. You could save a bit of money if you have a good plan and add one of the existing data plans to it. I think they are trying to save a little face in regards to the huge response RuinediPhone.com has received and the thousands of emails they’ve received. (RuinediPhone.com is currently down due to bandwidth issues, should be back up soon).

Here is the Rogers response to RuinediPhone.com:

Liz Hamilton, a spokeswoman for Rogers said the company had no comment on the petition but said it was apparent there is “confusion in the marketplace” about Rogers pricing plans for the phone.

She said iPhone 3G bundles are high value and offer customers savings over voice and data plans that exist today though they are not the only plans being offered.

“These are the best value for customers who wish to use the iPhone 3G as it was meant to be used, but as always our customers have choices,” Hamilton said in an e-mail.

She said customers can use their existing voice and smartphone data plans, or order other a la carte options so they don’t have to take the value pack.

from Canada.com

I don’t think we are the ones who are confused. I think they are the ones who are confused about a number of things. The first being how much data the iPhone uses and making customers worry about their data usage. The second what constitutes reasonable pricing. If Telus and Bell can offer unlimited data on smartphones and Rogers cannot, then they are confused.

From Rogers.com:

Important information for Apple iPhone 3G pricing

The following terms and conditions govern your use of the Apple iPhone 3G on the Rogers network. They supplement and are incorporated into the Rogers Terms of Service, which are available at rogers.com/terms, and form part of our Wireless Service Agreement with you. Capitalized terms below have the meanings given to them in the Rogers Terms of Service or the Wireless Service Agreement. Amounts below do not include applicable taxes.

Visual Voicemail
With Visual Voicemail, there are two ways to retrieve your voicemail messages:

  1. either by dialing your own wireless phone number or holding “1” on your phone, and then pressing # when you hear the greeting, which is treated as any other wireless call with all minutes used deducted from the number of minutes included in your voice plan; and
  2. accessing a Visual Voicemail message directly through your phone, which will not use any minutes included with your voice plan nor incur any data usage charges.

Data Usage

Your iPhone will be enabled for data usage. If you subscribe to a plan with no data included, data charges at a pay-per-use rate of 5¢/KB for data sent and/or received over the Rogers network will apply, unless you subscribe to a data plan, which we highly recommend.

Roaming
Substantial charges may be incurred if your iPhone is taken out of Canada even if no services are intentionally used. Voice and data usage while roaming, including data usage incurred from delivery of Visual Voicemail messages, will be charged at our regular roaming rates. Visit rogers.com/roaming for our roaming rates and destinations. If you subscribe to a data plan, then your data roaming usage (including receipt of Visual Voicemail messages when roaming) are charged at the roaming rates applicable to your data plan. If you subscribe to an international data roaming plan, then your data roaming usage (including receipt of Visual Voicemail messages when roaming) will be deducted from the number of kilobytes included in the roaming plan. If you want to reduce data charges while traveling, please ensure that the Data Roaming toggle is set to “OFF”, which will block data roaming when the iPhone is outside Canada

Hotspots WiFi
If you subscribe to an iPhone Voice & Data Package, then you will have WiFi access to Rogers and Fido Hotspots™ without incurring additional usage charges while using your iPhone. For the Rogers and Fido Hotspots footprint, please go to rogers.com/hotspots.

Important Note to Existing Rogers Wireless Customers
If you are an existing Rogers Wireless customer and have subscribed to a new iPhone Voice & Data Package, please note the following:

  1. the voice plan portion of your new package will become effective at midnight at the end of the day that you have subscribed to your new package;
  2. the data plan and text messaging portions of your new package will become effective immediately upon activation, unless you have an existing data and/or text messaging plan, in which case the data plan and/or text messaging portion(s) of your new package will take effect at midnight at the end of the day that you have subscribed to your new package; and
  3. since your existing plan will only be effective for a portion of the current billing period, the Monthly Service Fee and the minutes and/or data usage included in that plan will be pro-rated to reflect the portion of the current billing period that your existing plan was effective, which may result in additional charges for any minutes and/or data usage exceeding the plan’s pro-rated monthly allowance.

Unauthorized modification to iPhone
Your iPhone is restricted to use on the Rogers network, unless you are roaming. If you attempt to unlock your iPhone and use it on another network, it may become permanently unusable. Making unauthorized modifications to the software on your iPhone violates the iPhone software license agreement, and any resulting inability to use your iPhone is not covered under your iPhone’s warranty.

Data Early Cancellation Fee
The Data Early Cancellation Fee more fully described in your Wireless Service Agreement does not apply to the iPhone Voice & Data Packages.

Price Plan Downgrade Fee
If you have subscribed to an iPhone Voice & Data Package or a Voice Price Plan with a Monthly Service Fee of more than $30, then a Price Plan Downgrade Fee of $50 will be applied to your invoice if, for any reason, you change to a Price Plan with a Monthly Service Fee of $30 or less at any time during the Service Agreement Term. A Price Plan Downgrade Fee will not be charged if your service is terminated prior to the end of the Service Agreement Term, although you will be subject to any applicable early cancellation fee.

Ok so from what I understand, I can keep my existing plan as it and buy the phone, sign a new 3 year contract to my existing plan? Correct?

Also, what’s the cost of if the phone gets stolen and I need to get a new one?

  2. 2. ruffdeezy Says:

    That’s what it looks like.

There isn’t any no contract pricing yet, but it will probably be over $500. I doubt they will let you buy another one at 199 or 299 if you had lost it 2 weeks later.

  3. 3. noah Says:

kinda like i’ll rely on wifi for a long time…

  4. 4. Ward Says:

Hmmm… I’m currently on a rogers retention plan that offers everything I need for a little over $30 after everything. I DO NOT want to lose this plan, I would just opt for one of the $30 data plans on top of this.

I wonder if Visual VM will be working on the std. VM package or if that’s an iphone voice and data exclusive. Anyone have any idea?

  5. 5. ruffdeezy Says:

I really hope it’s a standard feature as long as you have voicemail in whatever plan. I think it should be.

  6. 6. Flop Says:

Sooooo if i have a hiptop 2 from fido with the unlimited data for 15 dollars on it i can use it with the iphone!?!?!?

  7. 7. ruffdeezy Says:

I would hope so but I don’t think they would like that. Can you use that plan on a first gen iPhone?

  8. 8. mobile23 Says:

i have CityFido and still have 20 months left on my contract. so could i purchase the iPhone 3G on July 11th?? even $500 will still be reasonable

  9. 9. ruffdeezy Says:

They haven’t clarified any upgrade requirements, it still could be regular upgrade requirements. But if you are going to add a data plan I’m sure they will let you.

  10. 10. generalinq Says:

I would think that people who are already on a plan can just resign for 3 more years on either the new plan or their existing plan and buy the phone for 199/299, no? or do they make you ‘upgrade’.

If this is true about keeping our existing plans, I don’t care/need the data plan. WIFI is good enough for that price. Yes I wish it was a no contract but… A newer and better iphone will come out and we will have the 3g still. Does this bug me? no not really. After spending $199 or $299..I don’t want to change phones for at least 3 years anyhow :) Have to get my $$$’s worth.

  11. 11. ruffdeezy Says:

This is a small victory for Canadian iPhone Users.

  12. 12. Ward Sutherland Says:

I’ve heard rumblings about rogers requiring your current price plan to be over $30. If this is try, I have have a problem as I’m currently on a $25 retention plan

  13. 13. ROGERS SUCKS!` Says:

THIS SURE LOOKS LIKE A ROGERS SITE!!!! DON’T YOU REALIZE THAT THE IPHONE WAS CREATED FOR INTERNET SURFING?!!!! AND FOR ROGERS TO NOT GIVE US AN UNLIMITED DATA PLAN IS JUST RIDICULOUS!!!! i SAY NO TO ROGERS. KEEP YOUR IPHONE!.

  14. 14. ruffdeezy Says:

The outlook currently isn’t great, but it’s better than it was yesterday.

  15. 15. ruffdeezy Says:

    @ Ward

    The Rogers site states:

If you have subscribed to an iPhone Voice & Data Package or a Voice Price Plan with a Monthly Service Fee of more than $30, then a Price Plan Downgrade Fee of $50 will be applied to your invoice if, for any reason, you change to a Price Plan with a Monthly Service Fee of $30 or less at any time during the Service Agreement Term.

I take that to mean that if you want to downgrade your plan that is $30 or higher you pay a $50 fee. It doesn’t say that you can’t start out on that plan. For example if you start on on say the $60 iPhone plan, then change it to the $20 200 mins anytime plan or the $25 my5 plan, then you pay a $50 fee.

  16. 16. Ward Sutherland Says:

yeah… I was wondering that myself, but my current setup is a bit of a mess. I have a whole bunch of plan credts and such applied to my monthy bill (put there by retentions). I would hadto make a change and lose all those plan credits.

  17. 17. ruffdeezy Says:

I dont think they will change them, it should be like getting any other phone now. Are you going to add one of the data plans?

  18. 18. ruffdeezy Says:

Maybe it means if you pay $50 up front, you can use your less than $30 a month plan. I wish there was some more info because they are the ones making it confusing.

  19. 19. Michael Says:

We are confused? What is confusing about $60 for only 400mb and 125 texts not to mention 150 daytime minutes? lol Do they seriously think that they are pulling the wool over anyones eyes? I love how they try to say the customer is the one confused, makes them look even worse and makes me think about moving to another phone company. Their boardroom must be filled with a bunch orangutans, because only a bunch of monkey’s would think their plans make any sense.

  20. 20. AG Says:

    That’s insulting to orangutangs.
